Knocking noise over small speed bump at speed?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by neilrs, Jan 11, 2017.

  1. Hoping someone can help me diagnose this...

When going over a lip in the road - like a small raised curb to get on to a drive way, or a speed bump like the one below, I get a very clear 'thunk' / 'donk' and *ONLY* on the front left hand side (near side) of the car

If I drive over with just the left wheel going over the bump, it'll make the noise, but won't with just the right.

It's difficult to describe the sound. It is a bit like if you coiled up a spring, it got stuck, then a little knock would release it quickly and you would hear it 'donk / thunk'

The car doesn't seem to 'bounce' so I don't think it's related to the shocks. All suspension components are effectively new so it shouldn't be a faulty part.

Slow, large speed bumps don't do anything. There's no creaking. The car doesn't feel like its handling or steering is affected... i've had new wishbones recently, new bushes too...

But things don't 'thunk' for no reason...

    Any ideas?

  3. Interesting, I wondered that... as they're new on. I went for the Superpro adjustable ones.

I wonder if they've not been set properly.

Mine was doing the exact same thing earlier last year, it was terrible going into the Ferien Park and I ended up taking it down to Raeder to get it looked at, everything was fine bar one of the droplinks having a tiny bit of play in it, swapped them out and still had the noise which progressively got worse and worse to the point of it sounding like something wanted to part company with the car.

The knocking then went away completely but I then got the dreaded Swivel creaking on that side and the usual symptoms of them being gone, I fully belive that the noise was the Swivel joints starting to go on mine as when they ended up completely fucked it didn't knock anymore. That's my experiance anyway

  5. swivel joints on the hub? they're also fairly new... replaced the swivel hub when i first got the car

will check both of them out as potential issues

Yeah, my bottom ones went again, 40k or so out these ones.

I've seen a few fail not long after being replaced as well, typically poor QC on the parts

  7. Cheers - this would be less than 10k miles :-\

Just annoying when the part is feck all but it takes a couple of hours to pull it all apart and stick it back together

Yeah it is a pain, it might not be on yours, thankfully they are fairly easy to check on the ramp, did you have the full assembly changed or just the Swivel to the uprated ones.

  9. edit - double post

  10. The hub was replaced at RSTuning when I got the car, so around June last year

The droplinks are the Superpro ones

    Are there uprated swivel joints?

The replacement ones that are available on eBay are from the N4 rally car

  12. another classic item that causes the 'over bump knock' is anti twist link, same item as drop link just works horizontally instead vertically and sure as hell knocks when fubared.

  13. If that's the 'anti rotation link', I've refreshed those (along with track rod ends and track rods)

    Got a link?

Would be interested in those for future, or any other N4 parts. I did look at what the N4 did for clutch/flywheel but it's got a different transmission altogether

    Or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-GENUI...460806?hash=item2ee996a9c6:g:fsMAAOSwdzVXr0si ?

As an aside, I laughed when I saw the £1,150 Trophy-R brake disks!!

  14. My lower ball joint went after about 10 months and maybe 8k miles. Got it replaced under warranty where the work was done.

  15. Sound silly but have you got mud flaps?
Both my oem and after market ones catch making a clunk in the exact conditions you're describing.

  16. Not silly at all mate, I think the more info on these threads the better as you know people will find this in searches when they have an issue

No mud flaps though. Sounds more mechanical than something hitting plastic. I have bottomed out before and that is more of a bang, whereas this is basically more of a "oh what part just snapped" sound, where you expect the steering to then feel different, but is repeatable

Bit like if a bush was getting caught and then suddenly springing back

I'm off to the garage on the 20th to get it up and take a look

These cars are so fragile !

Keep any suggestions coming and I'll try and add more info. I've read a lot of these type of threads today but all the info thus far has been new

  17. I'll have to record the. Pose my mud flaps make. It honestly does sound like something breaking lol.

  18. I'm getting the odd noise to the front end also. Drop links and wheel bearing getting replaced soon but could be the swivel hubs going from the info above.

Our shitey roads don't exactly help!!

  19. After a lot of digging.... I believe this was a spacer on the hub that may have got pressed into the old track rod end, and thus was missing.

  20. Thread did - was there a particular part you replaced, purchased? I have the exact same symptoms!

  21. now thats a proper thread resurrection right there, nice

  22. what suspention you have?

Isn't this more than likely to be the anti twist links
