Just bought a 197

  1. Hi all I've just picked up a 197 to go alongside my 250 to be eventually turned into a track weapon.

However I find it doesn't idle the best and every now and then it seems to idle quite lumpy. It's always been serviced which I know doesn't mean it's going to be trouble free but I didn't think it would idle lumpy. It's quick and performs how it should but I just don't like the idle.

    Any ideas,

    Elliott.

  2. I had 197 2008. before meg250, i had this problem when was cold outside and after i cut out both cat, and the idle was worse when i put up toyo manifold. They said thet mapping would solve that, but than i got good deal for meg 250 and i sold it like that. Do you have anykind of strange rev spot around 2500rpm?

  3. The F4R is known for lumpy idling. It depends on how bad obviously....

Poor/low octane fuel can do this this as well, especially at this time of year.

  4. Forgot to add, get some pics up :grinning:

  5. Timing could be out if it was done using the "tip ex on the pulley" method and not the proper locking tools! It doesn't take much...

  6. Cheers for reply Marin. Yes I have an obviously flat spot around 2.5k.

I find that when I let the clutch go out in first the revs drop so I have to rev a bit higher to match the clutch?!?!

This has a toyosport manifold on it also.

    Any ideas?

  7. Soon as I've given it a proper clean I'll get some up, it's mega tho and I love how nimble it is compared to heavier meg.

How would I check this mate get it into a garage?

  8. Ideally a Renault specialist who knows what they're doing with the F4R engine and has the proper locking tools to be honest mate.

  9. Clean injectors and Throttle Body, you will see an improvement in idle.

Also check cam timing while your at it.

As for the flat spot, map it.

Do all of the above and she be putting smiles on your face like no other.

  10. Thanks for reply @osmanv ill have a go at that myself. Do I need a certain product to clean them with once I have taken them off?

  11. No real idea hey, my car just goes to my local mechanic in south africa and he sorts everything out for me on his own.

When I first bought the car, the idle was very bad on cold start ups, sometimes it would just switch off on its own.

After sending it in for cam timing, injector cleaning and Throttle Body cleaning I noticed a improved idle. This was around a month ago.

I had the car mapped on Thursday and the idle improved further but with a noticable increase for vibrations during idle.

The car is going on Tuesday for final tweak in the map as the car has to adjust to the new map and logs have to be checked so I'm hoping they can sort out the extra vibrations experienced.

Please note that my car is around 170 000km and managed on the dyno 112 wkw without a map, 63mm double decat exhaust & panel filter.

Wish you all the best with your clio.
