Independent garage servicing - Reading

  1. Can anyone recommend a good indy in the Reading area? I have a 2016 Megane 275 which will be out of warranty in June. Don't see much point carrying on using Renault once the warranty has expired. I've just had a new gearbox on warranty and I can't see much else going wrong!

My nearest dealer is in Old Basing these days so it's not exactly convenient for me. Saying that I don't mind travelling for good service and peace of mind the car is being looked after properly.

  2. I don’t live to far from Reading, I used Martins Renault Basingstoke for a service once, seemed ok. I don’t know of any Renaultsport specialists in the immediate area.

  3. Martins in Old Basing (Basingstoke) is who I've been using. I'm not a massive fan as they are too busy (especially if you need a courtesy car), and I like indys where you can talk to the guy who is working on your car.

It's not Martins fault they are busy, as Renault seems to have closed every dealership within easy reach of Reading. My nearest are Old Basing, Winchester, and Swindon! Had to go to Swindon to get a new gearbox on warranty in a reasonable time frame.

  4. Pretty sure your warranty will run out in June 2020, they came with 4 years warranty. How many miles did your old gearbox do?

  5. Oh really? I had in my head it was 3yrs only. I'll double check, thanks!

Gearbox managed just under 14k before the output bearing went. Not great is it?!

  6. Mines on 26000 with no trouble so far, fingers crossed!
Definitely 4 years mate, plus road side assistance too. Renault currently have update out for the Satnav etc, worth calling then if you haven't had a letter. :grinning:

  7. I had 4 years warranty like the man said. Doing your own general service is a easy if you are that way given. 4 year service is a reasonably costly one, it’s all easy to do yourself apart from changing the engine coolant. From what I remember Basingstoke quoted me £160 for changing the coolant alone. I did it with my Dad but he knows what he is doing around cars. Engine/Gearbox oil, spark plug change, air filter is easily doable if you are in any way mechanical minded.

  8. I’m on over 40,000 miles with trackdays and a couple trips to South of France(2,000 miles a piece) with no trouble with gearbox to put your mind at ease paddy. Changed the gearbox oil recently and is definitely worth doing as the gearbox feel is sweet as a nut now. Even in severely cold weather.

  9. Will look to change my gearbox oil in the not too distant future. Was always paranoid about the box in my old 200 but it was a dream. Presume driving styles can make a difference!

  10. Paddy - I got Renault to do the satnav update whilst it was in for the gearbox

I bought the car secondhand on 6k. No track days in my ownership, but driven hard on occasion. I wouldn't be surprised if it had seen the track judging by the tyres. Consider myself reasonably mechanically sympathetic, but the gearbox did go after I'd done a 600 mile day hooning in Wales (and another the week before - I had some time off!).

Think I've just been unlucky tbh, but this is the second Renault Sport 'box I've had a bearing fail. 172 Cup went on about 50k IIRC. On the way home from 1500 miles around Scotland....... (detecting a theme here!!). That gearbox/car got worked hard and took plenty of stick to be fair. Was bullet proof other than that.

The new 'box in the Megane definitely feels a bit less notchy than the old one. Used to find it was easy to miss a gear when trying to drive it too gently around town (was fine when on it). Can certainly see how an oil change ahead of schedule would be worthwhile.

I don't have the time to do the servicing myself. I'll stick with Renault for another year. I have a good indy that I use which I'm sure will do. Just wondered if there was any local specialist out there. I used to take the 172 Cup down to Rentec in Portsmouth but I don't have the time for that these days!

  11. Updated my Satnav today, was actually very simple and straightforward. Hopefully it'll stop the Bluetooth from playing silly buggers but I doubt it!
Sounds like you were just unlucky with your gearbox.
I'm fortunate to have a Father and Son Renault specialist local, they're also very clued up with Renutsports.
I did a road trip last week around the North Pennines, North Yorkshire dales and the Lakes. The car was absolutely epic! Will be doing track days once my warranty has expired, can't f**king wait! Hopefully my mate will have his Eunos Roadster turbo'd by then, should be fun!

  12. Fortunately my 250 has lasted 115k
And is still on its original clutch and gearbox and was remapped at 5k
I have owned it from new,
Mind you it never gets launched from stand stills which is a big factor in broken g boxes in my experience.
no dought the clutch will die at some point in the future though and with maybe the gearbox with it lol

  13. Well I jinxed myself with my previous comments! I very slight whirring noise has developed on my car which is more noticeable the faster I'm going. I also never launch my car from a standstill and always let it warm up before giving it full beans. Going to get my Renault specialist to see what he thinks. Have also noticed the box/diff seems quite noisey when reversing off the drive. Fortunately I've still got just over a year of the warranty left but taking my car to local dealership (Lookers/Evans Halshaw) sends shivers down my spine! They'll say it's just normal noise so reckon I'll be on the phone to RUK!!!

  14. 115k on the original clutch is very impressive, presume like me you don't sit stationary in gear ( not that it'shhelped me) What power figures are you running?

  15. Helped!

  16. 104k on mine, before i changed the clutch, only a problem when i was on track

  17. I’m running the dreaded engine killing stage 1 bluefin on mine :fearscream: it’s never seen a rolling road tbh lol

  18. My gearbox being replaced under warranty, it was the diff making the noise which was gradually getting worse. They are also changing the clutch for the price of the parts. Very happy with this outcome, just hope the new one lasts longer!
