Does anyone know where the best/easiest place is to take an ignition live from inside the car? I guess there's a fuse box in the cabin somewhere (haven't looked yet) so could just use a fuse tap but if anyone's any experience doing this on a mk3 it'd help. Just wiring in a dash cam.
No experience with the 250 but I always used the cigarette lighter feed in my 172. Simple to get to usually and easy to tap into and route wires up the dash
Best bet will probably be to take the glovebox out and pick from there. Once that's out its only a few more clips until the stereo mounts are exposed so you'll have your pick of the glovebox light, 12v socket, stereo..
Not as easy as it could be! I thought I was getting a perm live from the 12v plug. The middle wire (pink/red I think) was showing as always live but it goes off after about 10 mins (like the stereo etc if you've been sat there with it in and the engine off). There's a blue wire too, but that just carries a 12v when the lights are on to illuminate the little ring round the outside. I'll keep you posted if my battery starts running flat
Quite a bump but to add what I ended up doing. Still getting to know the 250 (had my 200 in pieces at times!) but the in cabin fuse box in the glove box behind a little flap gives you access to, believe it or not all the fuses. Only issue I had was there seems to be no information in the car/handbook or in the public domain about what each protects.... At the end of the day 12v is 12v so I just found one that switched on with the ignition which happened to be the only 3amp fuse there (USB devices draw very little current so I just felt it appropriate to match it to something already low powered). I used a fuse tap, which maintains the original fused circuit and just splits the live onto a second fused circuit. There's a large bolt just to the left of the glove box behind the end trim (think this might be for the dash rail if they're built like that) that is fairly easy to loosen up and get a fork terminal behind as the chassis ground point. Hope it helps someone if they search
Some good info worth bumping there mate! Not used a fuse tap before but seems a good way to retain factory wiring and keep it tidy.
