Still on the hunt for one of these, but I found one on AutoTrader for £3k with 170k which is about £1.5k cheaper (30%) than the going rate for an 80k mile example. I know that the car will have more wear and need more money spent on it (i.e. suspension) which I'm ok with it, and it'll be worth less when I come to sell it on (but not £1.5k less) - but are there any larger bills (beyond wear and tear stuff like clutches) that could come along at 200k+ (I do 18k a year so 200k is less than 2 years away for me!). Specifically I'm thinking of things like turbos / engines etc.
At 170k your in unknown territory in a megane sport. it should of had the aux belt changed twice and had a clutch already. Although they have a cam chain id also get that checked out. If your planing on driving the car hard be prepared for some big money to be thrown at it. Plenty of traffic vans will have covered that mileage no doubt. At 170k it will have just been mostly motorway miles. At 70mph these engines are just ticking over in 6th gear. I drove one with 121k before i bought mine and it felt as good as mine does with half the mileage. I could of bought that for £3300 a year ago. If you take the chance on it and things start to go wrong with the engine/clutch/turbo they are dearer to fix than the petrol 225's/r26's. second hand parts are very rare.
Totally agree i certainly wouldnt be planning doing 18k a year. Id be happy running it doing the mileage i do in mine though about 5k a year.
Where as I always support the argument mileage doesn't matter if it's been well looked after. Being a diesel it could be motorway miles which is much easier on the car. Modern day Diesel engines can go forever without big rebuilds too. I've seen many articulated lorry tractor units with over a million miles use still working just fine. I once bought an early 80s 205 GTI with 280,000 miles on the clock, yes that's not a typo. Needless to say it was on its 2nd engine but apart from a little rust the old girl was in great shape!
Just as a guide mine is an 08 plate and had 32k miles on when I bought it 12 months ago, lower mileage ones do exist and they're worth waiting for. Trust me i've had first hand experience
I'm sure they exist - but perhaps not in the price bracket I'm looking at! (<£5k) Of course if someone happens to know of one for sale I'm all ears...
I disagree in terms or road cars. The older diesel engines from around 1995-2005 (peugeot xud/ vag pd/rover l series) will do much more mileage before something expensive to repair goes wrong. No doubt the m9r engine block will run for hundreds of thousands. But what about the turbo, clutch, fuel injection pump. All of which cost easily over £1000 to repair. Plenty of renault traffic vans have fuel injection problems at higher mileage. Its well documented and costs a hell of a lot to fix. Also another thing thats been over looked is the possibility of a blocked dpf. Either a delete pipe and remap or replacement dpf costs a few hundred pounds. Modern diesels with higher mileage simply are not as cheap to run as they used to be. 1 thing goes wrong and you may aswell of bought a car with full documented history. Im not just talking about a few stamps in a service booklet. With much less mileage and paid the extra.

The joys of buying Renault, just the other day I saw a jag on auto trader with 400,000 miles on the clock and by all accounts it was in perfect working order.
