High mileage Megane 250 Cup

  1. Is it worth to buy Megane 250 Cup with 106k miles on the clock? Seller claims it to be in TOP condition. My last one had 72k miles on the clock, and it was in really good condition. Is there something to afraid with that much mileage, or its nothing if its been always looked over? As i understand, there is a full service history also. I think i have to look over the history to see what parts are new on this car? Clutch and dual mass flywheel along with the brake discs and pads are the parts to worn out the most i think?
     
  2. it's always going to be a gamble even at 20k miles.

    20k being what mine has and still needed a new gearbox.

    High mileage can get you some good discounts, worth seeing if it's been motorway miles or not.
     
  3. In fairness, it's not common for 250s to need new gearboxes!

    If it's on that mileage, it's unlikely to have been used as a trackday car, probably more likely a commuter car along motorways for most of it's life.

    The clutch should have been changed by then I'd hope (check the history), I'd imagine it's probably on new discs by that mileage too, but check them out to see how much is left on them.

    If it has Recaros, check the bolsters for wear from the driver getting in and out, assuming it has Xenons too, check to see if the headlamp washer are working.

    On the test drive, go over a few speedbumps, make sure there isn't any knocking from the front as that could be a suggestion that the swivel hubs (or whatever they call them on the MK3) need changing. Check the boot lid doesn't knock over bumps either. Lift the boot to see if it rises properly - I had to change the gas struts in mine and they're not that cheap.

    106k is fine for the engine, but other parts are likely to need changing. Check for knocks when driving. Give the engine some welly to get some movement in it to make sure all the mounts are fine. If they clutch hasn't been changed, check there isn't any slip.

  5. My previous 250 gearbox felt tight on 70k miles, so i think its down to who and how its shifted. Im going to check out the cars history to see is it worth buying. Other than that, the price seems really good compared that its a true Cup version with other goodies like my previous car, and thats just exactly what i want. It can be right that this car has been daily driver more than a track car, again it was like that with my previous car also (last/first owner never went to track).
    On the pictures it looks completely mint compared with the mileage, lets see how it is in real life. White with the grey plastics and black Cup wheels are nice.
     
  6. Pay little cos you'll get little back. Not for me high miles but as with any car you pay your money & you takes ya chance.
     
  7. well that's what I mean, I bought the car from a dealership and within a week it was in Renault having the gearbox diagnosed.

    Pretty sure mine was an ex lease so probably not that well loved but other than that it's been perfect (i also didn't pay a penny for the gearbox).

    Sometimes it's just bad luck, first car I had ever had with a gear box issue. There's always a risk with any car regardless of age but if it's stong at that age / mileage it will probably keep going for a lot longer.
     
  8. Found another one with the same spec and almost 3 times less on the mileage. For the extra couple of thousand euros it seems a great deal, also its located much closer (Sweden). Lets see what happens, want to get part of some group buys already :tongueout:
     
  9. Pretty sure there was a thread on here of a chap who done 126k or so within 3 years on his 265. Car never failed him.

    As stated, if it's in good condition then it could be a bargain.
