Help - Track day setup - Tyre edge worn badly

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by GoodTimes, Aug 30, 2021.

  1. Hi, I am new to Renault, but not racing, and just took my Megane RS Cup 250 (tuned to 300) to a track day on Nankang AR-1.

I get bad grip at larger steering angles and heavy understeering. I did not get that with the Falken street tyres on a previous track day. I also get _heavily_ worn edge on the left front wheel (the track has several sharp right turns). Air pressure warm: 2.45 bar.

Question 1: did you ever experience heavy edge wear like this, and if you did manage to sort it out, how? FL1.jpg FL1b.jpg FL2.jpg FL3.jpg

And for reference the Front Right:

Question 2: What R tyres fits best on the Megane for track days? I have both 18 and 19" rims available.

Question 3: What are the popular upgrades to Megan RS for better track performance, especially related to the issue.

  2. First of all wow, that's some wear. How many track days was this?

Also be good to know what suspension setup you have currently.

I believe if standard then semi slicks like the AR1 don't do aswell with wear. More grip but not much camber is normally a pain.

I believe camber helps massively when using r rated tyres.

However this is just things I've read. I'm sure the experienced lot will come along and sort it out.

  3. I'm amazed if that happened in one track day. Stunned actually. That would be a few hundred miles if you did 100 laps of a 3 miles circuit (I'd also be amazed if you do 50+ )

It is possible for the left wheel to be camber related. If just the left had too much neg camber but tracked true, it might wear on the straights also

First of all what track was it, by looking at that tyre i would say possibly Thruxton.

You could also be looking at a worn ball joint, steering bush or track rod end.

  5. Tyres were bought used with 1/3rd left. They were nicely and even worn. Me and car did the uneven wear.

    Suspension is standard.

Sounds right, lets see what the old foxes says

  6. They were 1/3 left when I started the track day (bought used, even worn)

The car is not tracking completely true: it drags slightly to the right

  7. The track is a short track 45 to 50 seconds.
Interesting, how do I find out. Last owner recently exchanged a ball joint on each side.
