Hello there, I am a new R26 owner from Dorset. Picked the car up yesterday and looking forward to bringing her out on some track events where I am sure I will see some fellow forumers. This is a new era for me, I have been a bit of an old Porsche fanatic for the past 15 years and got to race my 944 S2 in the Porsche Club Championship a few times and before that with CSCC. Here is an in car video from me back in 2011: https://youtu.be/O5EQHaLWZJo Cheers Neil
Thanks everyone, the car I bought came from a friend and former work colleague over the border in Somerset so I knew the car had led a pampered life. It was advertised on PH: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...e-x84-p2-renaultsport-f1team-r26-2007/4257219 Will need new disks and pads though before she goes on track.
Hi there, I will be booking up for Goldtrack day at Thruxton in August soon which will likely be the cars first time on track. I have never driven Thruxton and unfortunately my 944 S2 race car is on the low 90s dB and so likely wouldn't pass the noise test even if I ripped all the decals off to make her look like a road car. Very rare chance to get out at Thruxton which is annoying as its the nearest track (40 mins). Castle Combe is about 1hr from us so I will be there again at least a couple of times this year but likely in the Porsche.
Hello NJH, Welcome to the Forum. Like you I am based in Dorset and also like you come from front engine rear wheel drive to the R26. Have had my car since October last year and have had a few track days in the UK and several trips to the Nurburgring (see vid's here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuc1kFu9Zoj9CzcUaRT9H9g ) and learnt which upgrades are essential to improve the handling, braking and power for track days and fast road. Mine is now a MUCH better car than standard and if I can offer any help as you get into your car just PM me. Cheers Paul
Thanks again guys. I spent many years in south Somerset, worked at Westlands for about 5 years so its all the same to me. I may be asking you a lot of questions Paul. In the short term I know the car needs new brakes as the front disks look to worn to me for x-drilled, will need to decide if the insurance will be OK with Brembo HC rather than the expensive original x-drilled. I have also never used stuff like the Ferodo pads as I started with Pagid Yellows on the race car and never felt the need to try anything else, they are crazy expensive now though so my first thought is the Performance Friction jobs as a few of the guys I raced with used those and swore by them. Cheers again everyone. Neil
Hi Neil, The OEM cross drilled are OK for road use but have a reputation for cracking, as a lot of cross drilled discs do, when used hard on track or road. I have the Brembo High Carbon discs which are better and I use the ENDLESS pads all around in the OEM calipers. The discs are a bit cheaper and the pads NOT cheap but I have really put some miles on them and used them hard on track and they deserve the name!! They will also pay for themselves in the long run providing excellent performance and the discs are still perfect with the pads now half worn but absolutely NO fade or other issues. First job I would suggest is to change to braided lines and 5.0 or 5.1 fluid (ENDLESS again!) and remember to change the clutch reservoir fluid as it is shared with the brakes!! For insurance for a car with modifications try Sky Insurance as they are friendly, helpful and understanding..especially to the more mature gentleman!! Good luck Paul
Welcome along mate, I am running a Performance Friction system on my car and find them very good, I have used their kit on other cars and always been impressed. Hope you enjoy the car www.car-addict.co.uk
Thanks again guys, I am going to go with the HC front and OEM solid rears with Ferrodo pads. Aircon needs looking at, the handbrake is dodgy (button still sort of works though) and although the car tracks straight throttle on or off and through the corners I think I can feel a worn/loose something up there like a track rod end as it pulls sometimes over bumps. Oh well still an amazing amount of car for what I paid for her and bonkers relative performance. The previous owner never replaced the disks in the cars lifetime, how on earth they managed to get to 60k on x-drilled is beyond me, when I had a Porsche road car with them I never got over 24k on front disks. Led a very gentle life this car.
