Handbrake not fully releasing

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by noshadow, Mar 12, 2015.

  1. Just went to take my car out of the garage after 6 weeks but found the handbrake won't fully release. When it was in the garage it was parked with the handbrake fully released, but now there is very little travel in the handle itself. I jacked the car up and the wheels won't turn when the handbrake is set as high as I can get it, and when I release it the wheels take some physical effort to get them to rotate and you can hear it scraping along the disc.

Anyone have any ideas of what the cause is and how to sort it?

  2. So the handbrake wasn't on when it was in storage?

  3. That's right, the handbrake wasn't engaged when it was in storage. I thought this was best practice for long term storage? I only put it on today when I tried to reverse out the garage and heard scraping, I put it on out of habit when I went out to have a look what was making the noise.

  4. Yeah it is good practice to leave it off, on previous cars I've had the brake pads bind not had the problem with leaving it off though.

I know the handbrake design is a bit dodgy although I haven't had any problems with it myself.
I'd be looking at the actual handbrake as I think a bit of plastic or something can break away causing the handbrake to not fully release.
I think the solution is a new handbrake which are quite pricey from Renault!

  5. Youl have to strip the plastic trim around it to get a good look at the mechanism

  6. Thanks.

The handle goes fully down and only comes up a few clicks, would the handle go fully down if the mechanism was broken in the way you're thinking about? I notice you have an R26, mine is a 250 but do they suffer from this problem too?

  7. Ah didn't realise you had a 250, I'm on my mobile and it doesn't show profiles etc.

Don't think the mk3's suffer the same problem as I think they reverted back to a normal handbrake instead of the accelerator from the enterprise!

  8. Ovy

    Ovy

I'd say the pads are just sticking a bit and showing resistance to both the discs and the handbrake.

  9. I've had a look at the pads and it does look like they are sticking to the disc. What's the best way to sort this?

  10. Hi mate. I have a sticky caliper, not releasing properly. Bought a service kit from Brake parts . com, some brake fluid, and will be stripping the caliper piston to clean & reseal. Mines a 225, which I believe is a common issue, not sure about the 250. I'll let you know how easy/hard a job it is

  11. Try driving it for a mile, should sort it out if it's binding pads

  12. Took it for a spin this morning and it seems to have done the trick.

Whenever I leave the car parked up a few days it always feels like it's sticking as I try to move off. It's never been as bad as it was yesterday though and I've left it sat idle for weeks plenty of times. It might be an idea to look into that service kit
