250 Grinding noise between 2.5-3k

  1. Hi gents

The 250 cup has been making a sound like an angle grinder at the front between very specific revs, 2.5 to 3k. Any thoughts? Engine is running grand. I initially thought the brake dust guard rubbing or something in the brakes, but now that I've pinned it down to specific rpms I'm now thinking diff / flywheel / gearbox. Makes the sounds going up the revs but also when off the throttle and going back down them.

  2. It can be air conditioner compressor if I call it good in English. Had same sounds in my Laguna II between 2.5 and 3krpm. Try to turn AC off while you hear it.

  3. Have my aircon off nearly all the time, but I'll try turning it on during the grinding and see if it changes anything. Thanks!

  4. Flip sake, more problems. Getting a crackling sound from just behind the steering wheel now (not related to the earlier grinding sounds). Is the clock spring unit an issue on mk3 meganes, like on other models?
My washer fluid bottle is also leaking and won't fill. And paint is flaking off the top of the lower door molding.

One last question - when I'm manoeuvring at low speed, once I get steering past a certain point the wheel keeps going by itself until full lock.... is this normal? The diff seems to lock up as well and the tyres seem to find it difficult to grip.

Any suggestions guys? The car registration service GU60 GOH if anyone knows it?

  5. Mine does the steering thing ,thought it was strange at first.grip is the same think its the low gearing and mines on mich 3, can spin in 3rd

  6. These cars are not built for quality, mine has fallen apart since buying it!!

I had exactly the same grinding noise at that RPM after the cambelt was changed and the water pump wasn't done at the same time. It's very likely to be the water pump IMO. Replacing the water pump fixed it for me.

I can't help you out with the other issues, although if it is a grabbing and then slipping effect, that's just the diff working as it should.

  7. Thanks for the suggestions! I was out today for a run in the car with the mechanic. At first there was no sound and I was thinking 'here we go again!" but I gave the car the beans for a while and it started making the noise. I showed the mechanic that clutch in or out made no difference. It's booked in for after Christmas so I'll mention the water pump then.

Any danger of the pump throwing the belt off - that wouldn't be good!!
