265 Grams springs making a noise

  1. Hi all, I've had new cup suspension refresh with new top mounts for 2 months now and I fitted the grams springs. Since fitted I've noticed that I get a top mount type knock and then when I've been for a very spirited drive or on track the suspension squeaks when turning.

My mechanic has checked everything and can't seem to put it down to anything other than the springs. We've noticed that there is play in the springs, they don't fit particularly tight on the top mount. But just strange that it seems to be heat related when they go from a knock to a squeak.

Anyway I've not have silver project top mounts fitted and while we had the strut out we took a closer look and some videos.

Does this look right? Do you think I could have been sent the wrong springs or they are a dodgy set?

Performance wise we have zero issues, epic on track. Just this knock after 15 mins of driving and then after a track session the suspension creaks and squeaks

Two videos of the springs while fitting:

  2. IMO, that little play wouldn´t be a problem. Actual problem apart, when you go to fit the Silver Proyect plates, take careful with the top of the spring and bearing. The place to them in the plates is very poor. When I fit mines, I notice one spring came out of his place a week after. I repositioned it again and no more problem for the moment, but be careful anyway.

  3. Thanks for the response. Yep silver projects already fitted. I'll keep an eye out but looks to be fitted ok

  4. Do you think there is a part missing at all?

A friend was wondering if I'm missing this white bit? But it wasn't on the original shocks which haven't been touched since factory fitted.

  5. Not at all. You had fitted exactly like mines, and as I said, zero problems after many tanks of B roads:tonguewink:

  6. Hmm. So confused on what this could be then if that amount of play looks acceptable. We've been through the whole suspension and it all looks good.

  7. Those creaks and squeaks would be the same bearing, but I asume you check it before fit. Remember, the Silver Proyect have uniballs, they will make a little "clank" for sure, over all on B roads. Like a friend of mine says, the racing life is hard!:tonguewink::tonguewink:

  8. Bearings are brand new, I did a refresh of all the suspension including new top mounts. Then a month later I've fitted the silver projects.

For those who are on lowering springs, say roughly -30mm all around and with OE top mounts, roughly how much negative camber is added to the front & rear on this set up?

    Thanks

  10. I wouldn't have thought much more than standard. -1 at the most.

I bought a set of KW V3 which uses standard top mounts and not looking to lower my car by more than 30mm, well 35mm at most. CGR now offers adjustable top mounts for the V3s for the MK2s, don't know if they will fit MK3s but they are fairly expensive anyway. Am I kind of screwed lol? Well I guess if my car is mainly for fast road anyway it would be fine right

  12. If this setup uses the standard top mounts then you can get adjustable top mounts. I went for the silver project topmounts which are fairly cheap and can give up to -2 degrees camber and additional caster which is basically free camber.

Silver project doesn't fit the V3 unfortunately, thanks for the info
