Gearbox problems

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by James Thornborrow, Oct 27, 2020.

  1. Evening all,
Looking for a bit of info or past experiences with this one.
Was on a track day at silverstone yesterday, car ran fine all day, great fun etc, however!!!! The french POS decided to break a little bit. In short, when changing gear:
1st is now where reverse should be, so I have to lift the stop collar on the gearstick to get it,
2nd is over under 1st, again, requiring the stop collar to be lifted,
Reverse is missing from the gearstick movement all together
And 6th is like stirring pudding, 4th isn't much better either.
3rd and 5th are fairly normal.
I have taken the battery crate off and played with the selectors on the box and can still get all the gears, the cables are all secure as well.

Anything blindingly obvious i've missed?? Any help and pointers is much appreciated.

Disconnect the cables from the gearbox end, see if they feel like there going into gear (with the engine off) gear selector normally sits between 3rd and forth.

The top arm is for the gears and the side one is for the across movement neutral, you won't need to bother with the reverse collar as that is on the gear stick.

Also was it better after it was left standing for a while ???
I had a problem on track where the gear lever went all spongy, turned out it was a hole in the exhaust blowing onto the gear cables and melted them.

  3. Sounds like one of your gear selector cable has popped off or broken check under the battery

  4. thanks both. The cables are still attached to the gearbox end (forgot to add that bit)

Also I drove it 3 hours home too, with no funny noises from the box end

  5. Almost certainly the plastic cable bridge is broken
    Shout if need help

  6. Yes this, I'm surprised nobody has jumped on the bandwagon yet and mate metal ones, mine broke too at one stage, 40 quid from renault for a new one. Premium plastic

  7. Yer should have been alloy, the ends where bolts are crack and gear change goes all to pot. When replacing trick is to not overnighted the bolts otherwise will crack again in few years

How the hell do you break a part like that, i had a cable come out of the holder, quick clip back in all good again, couldn't get it in any other gear than the one it was in

  10. The amount energy they take is substantial and over time getting hot then cold repeatedly and plastic cracks, even new they flex ever so slightly here’s image of bracing I put on mine makes gear change more solid

might have a look at mine now then, its done nearly 120k miles so its had a few gear changes

  12. Just checked mine, and yep!! It's broke. Just hanging on the cables, not attached at either end. Might buy 2, just incase haha.
    Thanks for your help!!

  13. do you have the part number for this bridge? Renaults are trying to sell me an entire cable set for the grand sum of £140

  14. This gearbox is fitted on MK2 RS dci, GT dci, traffic, movano, ... and it has a aluminium cast bridge you could try, can get it from a scrapyard
