I won't go into too much detail but basically I need a new gear selector as I ended up shaping a bolt hole on it. The only place I can find one is from ktec. They do a genuine Renault gear slector with a short shift attached for £230. The short shift is £130 on its own. Anybody brought and installed one on there megane 225?. What's people's opinons on short shifter's?
The short shift is probally the best cost effective mod you can do to a meganesport. It was so good I did the exchange service for a number of years. Not only does it reduce travel by a mile,it also gives the awful NDO gearbox shift `feel`. Renault will sell you a complete gear linkage and selector for £130. What year is your car? If its a early 2004-2005 225 the gear selector is different to later meganesports . It is a twin spring design and is now unavailable..you would have to get a phase 2 linkage and selector. Boardy on here now runs the exchange service..i am sure he will be able to sort you out..
It's 2005 and has twin spring. I've looked more into them tonight and everybody says exaclty what your saying that they make such a difference. So I'm assuming with this exchange service that I'll have to buy a new one from Renault then send it off to him? What price does he charge?
your problem is mate he only sends you the machine linkage top part..this is what you exchange with him..£60-odd I believe. You need the rare lower actuator as well...which he will probally have knocking around...but I do know he is struggling to keep up with orders at the moment. I will see if we still have any twinspring selectors knocking about..we probally even have a phase 1 shortshift left over for when I did them. failing that, you would have to buy the complete selector/linkage from Renault..then join his waiting list for a exchange on a machined linkage.
If you get your hands on a phase 1 selector..you could buy the cheaper engine dynamics short shift..this will only work correctly on a phase 1 selector.. As its to light to work correctly on a single spring phase 2 selector, that needs the much heavier, later type linkage, to function correctly.
modified shortshift phase 1 linkage..note how much smaller it is.. The hole to the right was its original ball stud mounting point..and yes that's all it is..but it makes a HUGE difference..
Ok thats cool understand what you mean now. A phase 2 actuator can fit on a phase1 though can't it being as they have the same gear box?. I'll have a look around for one but when I looked earlier I couldn't find one anywhere apart from one what ktec was offering.
That's mad really to that by just moving it that much it can make such a difference. Confusing really how Renault didn't just role them out the factory like this.
they almost did..the R26R has a near identical design..but this is even better....its just very close to the limit..so probally to risky for Renault Ktecs shortshift is a direct copy of mine!..which I direct copied from the original swiss guy who did it first!!
By any chance do you know where I can get my hands on them little locking clips that fit on the ball joints that connect the linkage cables on to the ball joints?
new cable mate I am afraid..i assume the `jaws` on yours are snapped off??,so the clip wont stay on. common fk up..normally caused by people levering off the cable with a screwdriver, not realizing the jaws are retractable by squeezing the sides of the clip
Just on the one, it's was like it already when I removed everything earlier, it had kept it on ok but I don't fancy when clipping it back on as it is when everything sorted and it ends up popping off. I have come across a company that make a little clip that goes over and binds together with screws but only they are only advertising them for vans, which include Renault.
could be a option..they are notorious for popping of when damage..no gears at the side of the road is a fkn nightmare!
