250 Fuel leak.

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by -Chris-, Aug 2, 2015.

  1. I'm not having a good weekend.

Went to put the car away in the garage tonight and before I shut the door I noticed a wet patch of fuel under the car near the rear left wheel. Dragged the car back out again and had a look and there's fuel spraying from the pipe that goes in or comes out of the fuel filter. In short, there's a puncture or split (likely the latter) on the inside of the bend.

It only sprays when the engine is running, ie the fuel pump is on and for a short while after I switch off (assumed until the pipe is drained). I've done a Heath Robinson sleeve for now (not that it stops it when the pump is running) until I can get a closer look tomorrow, or get it to a garage. I've left a towel under it for now and I'll roll it back out tomorrow morning.

Whats the verdict? Anyone had this before. The car is only 5 yrs old.

I'm hoping that it's the fuel tank side and can be a cheap fix. Search reveals engine out job for older models if it's the engine side. I feckin hope not!!!

  2. The pipe in question comes out of the filter and towards the back wheel, it's bends towards the centre of the car then up behind some plastic box or something.

  3. No one?

  4. You will be able to cut the pipe and put in a piece of rubber hose. You get metal inserts that go inside the plastic pipe after you've cut it to stop it crushing when you clamp it. Then slip the rubber fuel hose over the top and job done. If you don't know what you're doing take it to a garage that does.

  5. Cheers. That was pretty much my plan today. Short term fix anyway. It's something I can do at home.

Have since called Renault Wolverhampton and they have sent me a pdf schematic. You have to buy the pair of lines. £81 + VAT discounted or £86 + Vat normal price. I'll upload the schematic when I get wifi, for future reference.

Odd that it's split already though. Have ordered a new filter whilst I'm at it.

  6. Here you go.

I need one half of no 17, looks like the left hand half in that pic. You have to buy the pair.

  7. Just the 2 pipes that go over the tank?

  8. Dunno yet. Probably, knowing my luck.

Blood hell Chris, Your not having much luck with it recently?

    Just needs driven more :tongueout:

  10. Just made my final payment today too. The bloody thing may get sold at this rate!

I've cut the line just after the leak. It's literally 20mm from the fitting so provided I can re fit the line back onto the fitting then there's slack in the line to re-connect. Old bit of line is off, just trying to re-fit the remaining line back into the fitting. What a shit that is too! I can get it over 1 of the 3 ribs so far. I've tried a hair dryer and hot water. It's not having it. I've just come in for a 10 min break as my fingers are killing me.

Oh, it wasn't split. Looks like 2 scratches. Will post a pic later. Other line has similar but not enough to cause a leak. Will fit a rubber pipe sleeve over the pair when done.

i was wrong earlier. It's the hose coming away from the wheel (ie front)

  12. Forgot to mention. Yeh, looks like they do.

  13. When i changed my fuel filter i almost fitted it backwards. The engine side points towards the rear of the car. Tank side of filter points towards the front of the car

  14. Fixed this today.

I had to buy a new fitting as I broke the green clip trying to get the old one off. Top tip, clean it up before trying to push on the clip. I bought two lengths of rubber fuel line - 6mm and 8 mm int dia, a 90 degree 8 to 6 mm reducer and some 6mm brass inserts. 6mm hose from barb fitting to reducer. 8 mm hose from reducer to nylon pipe (insert inside nylon). All clamped using decent clips.

its not permanent. I intend to buy the OEM fuel lines later and drop the fuel tank when I can get it on the 4 post lift at work. A job for winter I reckon.

  15. Did this job get sorted and what was the cost. Similar issue on a chafed pipe, not actually leaking but wants replacing.

  16. Maybe something off the road flicked up and hit it, looks like damage caused by something hitting it

  17. Good thread update this is, not seen this before, so looks like both the in and out pipes from filter are vulnerable to stone chips from rear wheel. Now planning lagging pipes with that split plastic cable run tubing stuff

  18. Hi, I just had a similar problem on my car, it has a small hole in one of those tubes. Luckily, it seems like renault already thought about this. I found this thanks to a friend that works at a Renault dealership. In my case, the pipe that is broken is 8mm ext diameter but they have the same items for 10mm diamtere variants:
    - Push fit connector: 7701038858
    - 1500mm of fuel line: 7701038860

I´ve just attached the images from the EPC with the PNs.
Ill update once I´ve got the job done!
