250 Floaty steering

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by steering, May 1, 2016.

  1. My only complaint about my 250 cup is the sense of floaty, light, not "tight" steering around the straight line, especially compared to my previous clio197.
The strange thing is that when you apply some lock, it changes dramatically to a much more positive, sharp feeling.

is therethere anything to do in order to improve it?

My alignment settings are pretty fine as well as my suspension

  2. Not overly convinced your geo is what should be, what toe do you think you're running up front?

  3. -0°.14' total

  4. Worn suspension, tyres.

  5. ironic user name?

  6. Could be a complex......

  7. My name is real:wink:
I don't think it is my car's problem. I have driven two other cars (250 cup and 275) and the feeling is more or less the same.
I thing it is renault' s choice. The steering is relativily light and not so responsive to the first degrees of input, at least compared to Clio 197 or even fiesta st...

  8. The steering feel is regarded as one of the best systems out there to be honest, and probably the best aspect of the Megane. Comparable or better than Porsche, at least in terms of electric powered systems.

Other manufacturers are told to look at Renault for inspiration with regard to their own steering. I think it's fantastic.

  9. It is a mater of taste. Personally, I would like this to be more alert to the first off centre move and maybe little stronger self centering force. Otherwise I agree with you. When you load the suspension and steer, the feeling is sublime

  10. Rear dampers

  11. its an interesting observation and there is a difference between a Mk2 and Mk3.

The Mk2 seems more linear from centre/neutral through the lock while the Mk3 tends to load up in a slightly more progressive manner off centre. It's quite a distinctive transition but I wouldn't call it floaty when centralised, more of a loading variation through a turn. It's also more prominent with speed.

  12. @L1011, ?? Rear dampers ??

  13. Yes. Have you checked these? Milage/age/condition?

If the car isn't controlled at the rear it will make a massive difference to handling, both initial response (turn in) and control of weight transfer.

Because the springs are relatively stiff, it's often difficult to diagnose a faulty damper with a static bounce test.
