Fedoro Ds2500, Carbotech XP8 or PF07?

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by traffking, Apr 8, 2015.

  1. Decided to upgrade all round and narrowed it down to these three, any preferences and where to get them from?

  2. It depends on what you want to use the car for mostly. I don't personally rate 2500's for track or road, I think the Megane is too heavy for them. I cant comment on Carbotech as I've never used them but PF's I have. They're a mega pad, but I use my car for circuit use mostly. They do work well on the road and from cold too, but do give off a lot of brake dust which if you don't clean off your wheels regularly can prove to be a pain to remove. They hold up well all day on track and I've never had any issues with them, I've had 05, 07's and both are great compounds.

  3. What are you going to be using the car for, just fast road driving or trackdays ?

I've used the DS2500 as that's what was in it when I got it and they were ok on track. Knockhill's pretty hard the brakes with two big stops. I use DS3000 which are much better. Can't comment on the two but I'm slowly making my way through a list of pads I want to try.

Also if your going for a more aggressive pad be sure the tyres are up to it as you'll very easliy overwhelm normal road tyres with the more aggressive pads.

I wouldn't bother wth the rear pads, just stick with standards on there. They don't do much and only really get a hard work out if you keep the traction control on to keep the rear in check.

  4. I've got ds2500's on atm and I don't rate them tbh g10far said the Megane is too heavy for them, I've got a set of Carbotech XP10s waiting to go on although overkill they were a couple quid extra then the XP8s and from the chap I spoke to said there is a big difference between the two

DS2500's are in a different league to the other two.

XP8's are my go to pad at the moment. More than upto the abuse of a track day and fine on the road. I ran the XP10's before and they are overkill and you won't see the full benefit from them unless you running proper R rated tyres or Slicks. They will overcome any road tyre with ease. Plus they need abused other wise they start to leave pad deposits. Oh and they destroy paint work and wheels. Other than that. Mega mega pad and ill go back to them when mine becomes more track focused.

  6. Is there anywhere but carbotech themselves to get the xp8's? And anywhere but ktec to get the pf 07's? I rang carbotech earlier and was told everyone was out so just waiting for a call back.

Speak direct to PF, Not sure about the Carbotechs. Im lucky in that the Mk3 Megane shares pads with various other things so there are plenty places that have them in stock.

  8. I use Performance Friction, tried PAGID and DS2500 found the PF's last longer and don't fade on track.

  9. could you comment on which other vehicles use the pads or direct me to where I could find this info?

  10. Ok where do we buy the carbotech xp8's for a Meg 265 and for how much?
Would I need to change the standard brake fluid, yes I do trackdays.
    cheers
    Andy

Carbotech direct. Ian is brilliant and very knowledgeable. Uprated fluid is a must with them as they generate a LOT of heat. Beware they are very hard on wheels and paintwork though but the performance more than makes up for it.

Bedding is procedure must be followed properly as well or you just won't get the full performance out them

  12. I run 2500's at the moment and they are a great pad but they have to be warm. They are poop when cold. I shall be going for the CL5+ next. If anyone has any experience on them it would be great.

  13. What do you pay for a front set Jamie? take it you mean Carbotech Europe?
what does it do to the paint work?

  14. CL5+ - good pad, slight cracking when worn, kind to disc

DS1.11 - great front pad, kind to disc, long lasting, good retardation

DS2500 are hopeless for front if pressing on, good rear pad though

PF industry standard, proper front pad, wont let you down.

Carbotec - just ordered first time

Pagid - yellow endurance - another industry standard, great stopping power, long lasting, kind on disc

With great pads must come great fluid:

    RBF 660
    Castrol React
or other top brands with similar wet boiling point, anything else might as well fit EBC pads, cause you're not really using vehicle to its full potential.

  15. Bobsan what is the PF industry standard? Is that just the OEM pad?

8s are around £210 from Ian IIRC, the dust they produce burns into the paint, I have to use a fallout remover every other week to clean it up as it just makes the paint work feel rough to touch, Same goes for wheels, you really need to keep on top of the dust otherwise it is very hard to clean off, my wheels need a refurb now but I was running the XP10s.

I won't use any other pad now, the performance is incredible even on the road from cold and Ian is a brilliant guy to deal with, plus the prices are pretty reasonable compared to some of the other pads with equal performance from other manufacturers, the pagids I ran previously were aimialr in terms of stopping power bit cost a bit more

  17. They say they are easy on the discs so will keep the originals is that wise?
Going to Spa next month so want good brakes

8's are pretty kind to discs, I went through one set of discs to one set of XP10's mind you

I ran RS29's at Spa in mine last time, Mega pad and they never went off even with my 30min+ sessions out

  19. Pagid rs29's ?
used to have rs42 on an elise which were good but expensive,
are the rs29s the pagid pad for the Meg?

Yeah Pagids, Loads of pad choice for the Megane as they share the same pad as various Evo's/Imprezas and a few others

I ran the RS29 on the recommendation of several people who run them in track cars, You can get pretty much any compound in our pad shape, I want to try some of the Pagid RST or RSL compounds at some point though

  21. Anyone run endless pads? I want something that will take the hammering of a track but not destroy my wheels

The decent compounds are big money compared to the equivalent from those mentioned in this thread, I priced them up to £350 odd a set in the same compound a lot of the Megane boys run at the Ring. Too much when there are pads that perform the same for ~100 quid less

  23. Endless pads are made with parts that arnt quite legal in the UK well I was told this by a tuner.

  24. I run the CL RC5+, great pad and works well from cold. You will get a little squeal at slow speed but that's all. Dust is relatively low also.
The backing did come off of one of my pads though after only 3 months, and one trip to the ring. Don't let that put you off though, Paul at CL is superb to deal with and got me a replacement set with no hassle. You will need better quality brake fluid though.

So are DS2500's and several other "race" pads.

  26. Is it just me or do they just seem to go on and on? Mine just seem not to wear noticeably at all since I fitted them.

My only real criticism of them so far is the backing plate material has corroded more than I've ever seen OEM pads or Ferodo pads. The pad material on mine is still attached and no visible cracks beyond a bit of fraying at the edges.

  27. Thanks Mike I think I'm just going to go OEM next in all honesty the fact the pad comes away does not entertain me at all, whether I got a replacement set of not. As we all know brakes are the most important part of any car especially when you are on a Sunday blast with your family or friends hitting bends at silly speeds and hoping to stop.

I think....think.....I'm done with the trackdays now for a while. OEM it shall be. Thanks again.

  28. Yes they do last a while when doing daily trips, quite a hard compound but still pretty friendly to discs, track sessions seem to take a little meet off them when they get really hot. The other 3 pads are still perfect obviously just a bad pad. The backing on mine hasn't rusted at all, I noticed the backing changed colour from bronze to dark grey after they had there 1st proper cooking. Ive got the RC6 coming as replacement for them so see how they are in comparison.

  29. Also if anyone needs a spare RC5+ pad just incase just let me know.
