R26 Dreaded swivel hub bearing fail

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by bmwBrett, Jan 4, 2017.

  1. Not had the car long, Was advertised with all the common problems addressed, Including swivel bearings, but saw on the receipt this was done 3-4 years ago and seems the passenger side has gone again or maybe it's the wheel bearing? No play if the wheel is held / wobbled at '12 and 6' but lots of play if held at '9 and 3'

Not going to tackle it myself, I see the bearing only cost's £20-50 depending where you go, But there is a Renault specialist local to me, that is offering to switch the swivel bearing for £140 (bearing supplied + 1.5-2hrs labour) option of +£50 to change the wheel bearing at the same time.

Would you say this is reasonable?

Another option would be to buy a pair of entire hub assembly that say they have no play on ebay for £120 for the pair - but don't really trust people these days

    Thanks in advance

  3. Thanks for guide price mate, where about's was that?

Going to ring around a few places in the morning and see what's the best price - as i'd get both sides done if it was nearer £80 a side!

@Markblack@MRS, Midlands Renault Specialist. The man knows his stuff!

  5. £80 per side for swivel joint?
Just lower swivel is £45 for the part alone so if that price is good, that's some very cheap labour.

  6. If it doesn't move at 12 & 6 but does at 3 & 9 then it will be your rack end or track rod end. Swivel bearings tend to seize & you can't move them by hand at all.

  7. Mine was £130 I think and I supplied the part. Could have got it done cheaper probably if I had travelled but I trusted them to do it right and was only 5 miles from where I work. I could also have done it myself but it's cold and I hate fixing cars in the winter.

Mine was nearside only and caused very heavy dry/low speed steering, bit of dragging to the left with associated tyre wear on the outside edge and some horrible crunching noises.

He only replaces the cup and bearing, it's around £20 worth of parts

  9. Sorry , is this for a mk2 megane?

I'm talking about the mk2 yes

  11. Wheel wobble play doesn't have anything to do with the swivel bearings.

That's track rods and ends as Lee said.

  12. Got the car checked over, Turned out it's the drivers balljoint and the passenger inner rod

Lower arm was only £52 - delphi, Was going to just change the Joint but for the extra may aswell refresh the other bushes on the arm

    Inner arm was £58

    Thanks for tips

I thought the lower arm is a Renault part only, that's why we change the ball joint's

  14. Inner rack arm on a 225, r26 is longer than a stock car. Track rod ends are the same. Bottom arm & ball joint are different too. You can get just the ball joint though.

  15. The lower arm was listed when he reg checked it, was named as 'megane 2.0 lower arm', he looked and said they physically look the same,

But who knows, will see tomorrow when he strips it down, worse case scenario he can just send the arm back and change the balljoint instead

  16. The one that Delphi does has a pinch type ball joint where as the 225/26 one is threaded. Also there is no hole for the anti twist links.
    Been there myself......

  17. There is defo 2 holes, but the balljoint is a pinch bolt fitting, Could I just not fit a pinch bolt? Or guessing the strut isn't compatible?

Will just get the ball joint, Thanks for the link

  18. The 2 holes are in the wrong place though. Ball joint is easy to swap if you have a big hammer & a jack. Alternatively if your garage is better specked then it's better to press the ball joint out.
