Devalued my car?

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by James, May 30, 2016.

  1. A friend of mine was talking to his work colleague about the 265 conversion I'm doing to my 225 Trophy.

He said I must be mad because all I've done is devalued my car and should of just put another 225 engine in.

Personally I think he's talking poo. I've never seen one for sale like this before so what do people think.

Is it worth less, more or just about the same?

  2. Just my personal opinion but - if I was in the market for a 225 yours would be worth nothing - I simply wouldn't consider it.

If you're doing it just to get it back running then the colleague is right - change the engine for another 225 and say nothing to a potential buyer.

If you are wanting to improve/change/learn with the engine conversion then fair play, no worries.

It will generally be worth less though, again IMHO

  3. I didn't bother with a 225 engine because chances are with the power it had (295 bhp) it will only break again.

At least this way I can up the power to around 325 bhp without worrying too much.

I've got no intention of selling it but he did get me thinking.

    Thanks for your opinion.

  4. Yeah, it will be worth significantly less because it represents a perceived risk; if something goes bang, it'll be expensive, and most car owners don't want those kind of bills

Upgrades are also increasing the level of customisation and thus reducing the target market it will appeal to. Some like loud exhausts, some don't, some want certain wheels, others don't

You may find that some types of cars with modifications that are common or widely believed to be reliable upgrades will hold value, but rarely go up. Examples are things like fixing known areas of weaknesses - eg changing the RS 250 gearbox or engine mounts, for example

note that I said perceived - rightly or wrongly, that is how it is

If you sold it with a 5 year guarantee it would be worth more - but obviously you aren't going to entertain that

So yes, an engine swap is a nightmare - and I believe it also needs declaring to DVLA etc ? And if you have done it yourself, many will steer well clear. No offence meant, but it's less likely someone will value your work because there aren't a number of independent third parties supporting the quality of your work compared to, say, RSTuning or Rennsport etc even though you could argue your work is just as good or better

  5. Looks like he was right after all.

If I ever do decide to get rid I would just break it and sell it in parts.

    Probably worth more that way.

They aren't worth fortunes so it shouldn't be a major problem i expect it will not make much difference.

  7. Probably not - parts usually get c. 50% of their value, but of course depends on demand at time you are breaking and whether or not you can store them and the actual "car" - chassis, panels etc, is only going to be taken by a yard for little value

Basically, you'll either make a fairly chunky loss or you may as well just stick with it.... Or, as suggested above, swap it all back but that sounds painful !

  8. Agree, 225's aren't much money, so decent mods are more acceptable.

A decent engine at that price point might be seen as an advantage. You won't get your money back on the conversion, but there will be a buyer.

    It's one of those,
a little bit like the clio meg conversions, some will jump at them other will want a totally standard car.

If I was buying one I'd look at yours without fearing anything but a non renault fan might not understand what you've done.

    Wouldn't worry about it personally

  10. Wouldn't bother me, but then again I've done the same sort of thing myself over the years.

  11. Still cheaper than putting in another 225 engine for it to just go bang again!
You run that for 2 years say and advertise it on this fourm people wont question the reliability too much, and all of the sudden it becomes an interesting buy imo

  12. I think I will run it until the car is passed it's best then either strip it out for a fun weekend car or buy a high mileage clio and put the engine into that.

Got it started earlier. Soumds nice to hear it running again.
Can't wait to get it up to rstuning for the map tweak now.
