250 Daytime Running Lights

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by Trowbridge_Gas, Jun 8, 2016.

  1. Hi,

First post here. I own a 2010 Megane 250 and the passenger side DRL is no longer working.

Just had 6 year service, cambelt etc. done at K-Tec and the guys advised there is no way of determining what has caused the DRL to fail. It's either the light unit itself or the circuit that sits behind it. Could gamble and order one or the other and have a 50-50 chance of curing it, or order both parts, which with labour + VAT comes in at £468.

So I was wondering if anyone on here could advise of any place I might be able to source either? Have looked on eBay but nowt on there... guessing it may be a case of just biting the bullet and paying, or just turning them off!

    Cheers!

  2. You swap the led drivers round and see if the fault follows or stays?

  3. I'm on the lookout for faulty drl light units if it does turn out to be that!

  4. Best thing i did was to buy front lip which holds the larger newer drl and connect them up.

to do this need to take off bumper, take out drls and the ballasts. on the newer larger drls you dont need the ballasts.
on larger drls i think its a 3 wire plug which is different and can be picked up from ebay or scrap yard for a few pounds. plug needs to be connected and off you go they will work brightly during day and dim when headlights on...

sell ur lip and other working bits and ul be quids in !!!!!!

  5. Great idea - did you buy the lip new or 2nd hand /ebay etc ? Wouldn't see many second hand ones.

  6. If this is possible, then great. However, according to post #6 on the thread below, it's not that easy?

  7. hi nigelo and dkay

i bought the new lip from renault. with discounts i think it was around £80.

its not that difficult at all.
the bumper wiring loom connects to the ballast. the wire from ballast connects to the drl.
when making the change the connector from the loom needs to fix directly to the drl. the connector is different so will need to source the correct one from ebay or take the new drl to a breakers and find the correct one that fits. was quite easy to find.

the new larger drls were about £77+vat each.

the difficult bit was to find the 3 wire connectors.
    1 wire is earth
    2nd is a normal +ve and
    3rd is a dim +ve

ive done it on my rs250 and all is good.

  8. Yay! Thanks for that info - next project I think!

  9. Cheers for the info!

  10. Sounds like a guide that needs to be made! Would like to do this!

  11. Id be pretty sure it could be done with the older drl units too, as universal led ballasts can be bought cheaply. Think i was quoted £300 for those older led units however, bit sus!

  12. I bought a secondhand ballast for £90 off ebay and a new old style DRL cost me just over £100 with my mate's Renault discount. Not exactly cheap.

  13. Turns out that the wiring was at fault and my passenger side DRL and ballast were fine after all.

So, I now have a ballast and brand new passenger-side (left front) DRL unit going spare. PM me if any of you are interested in buying them off me. I only want what I paid for them and willing to split.

  14. I'll take the drl unit - PM!

  15. Bits still for sale if anybody needs them!

  16. How do you go about swapping the drivers over?

  17. Is the DRL unit sold?
