Funny creaky noise when reversing and going forward onto drive at low speed.......any ideas ? The noise is not continuous but kind of on and off only when turning the wheel. It's a 250 btw
One or both lower ball joints: http://www.rsmegane.com/showthread....eak-from-steering&highlight=Lower+ball+joints
This has been happening in mine too. I've had a look online and came across a company on eBay called ROFAG, are they genuine?
I bought a pair of lower ball joints from that seller and had them fitted by my mechanic recently. They are the real deal. I believe several other people on here have also used that eBay seller. Aarons autos in Derby fitted one ball joint for me on on my last Megane (they provided the ball joint that time). I have only positive things to say about them too!
Yes, both times the noise went completely after changing them. From what the guys in Aarons autos tell me, the joint can wear in different ways. Generally speaking when its creaking the base of the joint has worn through and is rubbing against the housing. It can also wear around the outside which cause it to become loose in its own socket lateraly. This can cause a knocking noise, the tracking to be off and tyre wear on the inside of the wheel as it will toe out slightly under acceleration. A decent mechanic should be able to pin point if it is actually the lower ball joint first before they go and replace it. On mine it has always been the front left side which has worn the worst (in a RHD car)
Cheers for the advice mate. I'll get it in to my mechanic to diagnose then order from ROFAG if need be. Is there a way of me being able to see the problem if i was to take a wheel off maybe?
Best bet is to get it on a ramp on the plates that allow you to turn the wheels, and then get underneath with some chassis ears. I've replaced all four of my ball joints at least once, and one of the lower ones twice. It can be done on the drive if you have a good lump hammer, but it's not a nice job at all!
