250 Creaking at centre through steering

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by jack250, Nov 13, 2016.

  1. Noticed a clicking noise last night through the steering wheel which is now more of a creaking this morning. Only at centre not on lock. Changed both hub bearings recently as well as all links/rods etc. Any ideas?

  2. That's an odd one track rod ends? Maybe top mounts?

  3. Changed both these a month or so ago. Could it be bearings? I was convinced there was a loud noise over 70mph recently

  4. I've read your thread about the creak you're having too mate. Sounds like we could have a similar issue. I've changed most things on the front end recently bar bearings and drive shafts. When are you getting yours in to have the work done?

Just read your build thread and seen you've had the work done mate. Did it sort it?

  5. From the video, it looks like its coming from inside the cabin isnt it?

  6. See mine didn't creak like that mine was a noise outside and was rotational this I'm not too sure about

  7. Cheers mate. Going to get it on the axel stands in the next few days and have a poke around. I'll keep the thread updated

  8. The noise is also coming from outside the car around the front offside wheel. Does that shine anymore light on it?

  9. Maybe it's bearing

  10. In the middle its the steering rack, weird that the sound came after the change of inner track rods.

  11. ...and thrashing round Anglesey haha

  12. Had the car up on the axle stands to have a good nosey around. It seems to be the front drivers wheel making the noise. If I grab the wheel at 3 & 9 o'clock and move it it makes the creaking sound. Thinking bearings?

Would knackered bearings give a knocking noise over uneven ground also?

  13. I guess its hard to tell if you have a slight rumble coming from the bearing given how much road noise these cars have on sporty rubber !

  14. My wheel bearing did some really loud rumble, it was way over from the road noise.

  15. I had a similar noise on a car of mine years ago, it was an Astra GTE mk 2. (dont laugh)
The bulk head had a split in it.
I know nothing about meganes and don't know if this is possible, but it sounded the same when the steering was moved.
I do hope this not the case on yours.

  16. Did the wheel felt loose when you moved it in your hands? I guess it can knock but then the bearing have to be really loose/knackered already. Bearing should make rumble noise when driving and even more when you turn on one side (depends which bearing is dead). To me its still weird that it is the bearing as i havent heard it making creaking noise. To me it still feels something from the steering..

  17. The noise coming from outside is in direct relation to the noise through the wheel. Like I said, after jacking the car up the only noise I found was when I moved the drivers wheel. It made the same click/creak as when steering under load, not as loud obviously but definitely the same noise.

I'm having new bearings done in a couple of weeks. Going to keep my eye on things till then. Hopefully it will just be that and new bearing will sort it.

I'll update as of when chaps.

  18. Bit of an update after some more driving...

Took it on a car park to try and track down some of the noises. Getting a knock from front left, only happens when I transistion from left to right. Only 1 knock/click when the left side loads up. Also happens every now and again when pulling off.

    Any ideas?

  19. Steering rack bush, thank me later

  20. Nice one. Don't suppose you have a part number?

  21. Track Focus Direct do them.

Make sure it's lubed up when you fit it

  22. Turned out to be a lower ball joint. Must've been a faulty one fitted at the start of the year. All good now!
