Coilovers.....

  1. Hi guys,
Looking to get some coilovers for my megane 265 and after a few opinions of what's best and also anybody's first hand experience if you would be so kind.

Car will mainly be used for road but will see a few track days a year and possibly the ring.

    Cheers

  2. just had H&R coilovers fitted to mine and dropped it around 40mm, feels a hell of a lot stabler just general driving and virtually no body roll, and very comfortable over bumps in the road etc, cant comment on how they perform on track yet.

  3. Thanks for the reply.

I've been looking at bilstein b14's, kw clubsports and ast 5100. Just trying to decide whether the more expensive kits are worth it.

What made you go for the h and r mate?

  4. they came up on here very cheap, with only 500 miles use, they were cheaper than the bilteins which I was originally going to get.

  5. KW Clubsports for road use? Definitely not worth the expense.

  6. Yeah I agree, for just road use massive overkill.

    But here's my situation....
Currently have a modified r26 that I use for track days. The 265 is totally stock but will be 4 years old this year and out of warranty and I'm starting to get the bug for modding it. I've already had it on track and to be fair it is pretty good out the box. I just feel it could be improved in a few areas. I would like a set up that is more complient on the road for bumps etc but also much stiffer for track. So just debating whether to go with a set up like the bilstein's that is a decent upgrade and can just forgot about it or splash out a bit more and get the fully adjustable kits like the kw's or ast's. I really like the idea of the adjustable kits where I can have it in a soft setting for road and then stiffening it up for track. Just wondering what you guys think and if it's worth the cost.

    Cheers

B14's with adjustable topmounts, The rest are overkill for the odd trackday tbh.

  8. Yeah, that's what part of me thinks.

I noticed in another post you mentioned you weren't actually any quicker on the bilstein's compared to standard, although it did feel better. Was that with some negative camber too?

People don't realise how capable the OEM cup setup is, I ran mine for well over 3 years and done a LOT of trackdays on the stock setup, I only swapped to B14's as my original dampers were on their way out and i got a good deal on them making it almost cheaper to replace with the Bilsteins.

I never got a chance to run it with maximum camber on the topmounts but i would put money on them being quicker now with a decent amount of camber, its what the MK3 needs for more speeds through the twistys.

  10. Cheers for the info....

I appreciate what you mean about the standard set up being good, like I said in an earlier post. I'm just starting to get the bug for a bit of tinkering.

My main thinking behind getting coilovers is to improve the ride quality as I think it's a bit harsh at times (my r26 on cooksports is actually better) and improving the handling for track as it does role a little when pushing. Also it may one day completely replace the r26, but not just yet.

  11. Agree with Jamie as usual lol. The cup stuff is amazingly capable for oe. The biggest "improvement" for track would be camber on the front... They absolutely destroy outer edges of tyres without it. That's your first limiting factor, not the dampers or springs themselves. So either go big budget and buy a suspension kit with adjustable top mounts, put top mounts and maybe springs (optional) on the standard dampers, or run b14's/KW v1's with top mounts..... Depends on your budget and intended use dude.

  12. Are the silver project top mounts any good? Thinking maybe start with them to get a bit of neg camber on the stock set up.

    Cheers.

  13. I'm running h&r coilovers on my r26. Not been on track but they're epic on the road. Not too crashy either

  14. what this guy said.. waiting in anticipation

  15. I can't give my opinion on them as I have run the car for the last 18 months on the oe cup chassis. Done 6 or 7 Trackdays and loved it. Jamie has used the silverproject mounts on his bilsteins and had no issues I believe.

  16. I'm going to order a set and try them with the standard suspension first. Can always upgrade to the b14's later if needed.....

  17. Is the price of £110 for the silver projects correct? Seems very cheap! Is the quality good?

Also does running more camber mean other adjustment or can you literally put them on, set to say -2deg and away you go?

  18. I've just ordered a set, cost £127 including delivery....
