250 Chrome exhaust surround

Discussion in 'Exterior & Bodywork' started by Browny, Aug 30, 2015.

  1. Trying to get this looking new again but i cant seem to get it back, ive tried a few things but so far no luck. anybody have any advise on a product to use?

  2. Meguiars metal polish and some light wire wool!

EDIT: Use a microfibre first and some elbow grease and failing that use the wire wool.

  3. I have Auto Finesse metal polish but that just seemed to dull it when i used it with a micro fibre...

  4. You can get close with metal polish but honestly as above wire wool is the best/fastest way, polish and a cloth will take you all day and leave you with a stiff arm.
They're often still pitted and marred after all the soot is cleaned off though with it just being probably cheaply chromed.

I usually keep it clean enough not to use wool, but sometimes it's just needed and then finish it off with the metal polish.

  5. Are we talking like fine wire wool etc?

    Thanks for the advice

  6. I've had the same tube of Autosol for about 15 years, used it on the 250 when I got it, worked perfectly.

  7. I tend to use some regular kitchen tin foil and a bit of washing up liquid as lubricant.. removes soot and so on, but, as mentioned above, will not get rid of the pitting..

  8. The chrome surround is plastic though.. isnt it? I could be wrong but when i tapped it it didnt sound like metal

  9. Mine is in really good shape still, and not getting dirty/black that much. Because of that i was in a position that its a really good chrome part. Maybe its going to get worse when i install catless downpipe tho, lets see :tongueout:

  10. yes, it appears to me as painted/chromed plastic..

  11. Depends on how bad it is but I use Prima amigo and a microfiber cloth to clean the chrome surround on my 250 (based on a tip from my german detailing goods pusher) and it cleans of almost every spot nice and easy. An upside to this approach is that it is not as aggressive towards the surface as metal polish and wirewool.
Also if you after cleaning the surround give it a layer of wax (suiteble for high temperature) it makes it easier to maintain and clean (using normal car shampoo) for a period of time.

  12. Ill keep trying but i bought an assortment of wire wools from halfords, i have AF Mercury Metal but it doesnt want to give in.. Ba**ard!! One of the last things letting the appearance down.

  13. Mine comes up brand new everytime i was it, think ive used metal polish a handful of times in a couple of years

maybe yours was never cleaned and just corroded? Buy a new one if it wont budge

  14. It really wont budge and i've been detailing my cars for years. looks like im going to have to get a new one, kinda sucks.

Anyone have an idea where i can pick one up from? or a round about price?

  15. Browny,
    Replacement trim is about £114.
For what it's worth, my suggestion to clean is:
Remove the trim, just unclips and comes out when you slide a thin bit of plastic down the sides, three clips I think. Then apply a liberal (don't put it on like lard just coat it) coat of Meguiar's GXT metal polish and just leave it on for a day. Next day go back to it and use the metal polish and an old microfiber cloth to polish it.
Can do this without removing the trim if need be and you can normally get the polish down Halfords, at £10 a pop must be worth a try.

    Good luck.

  16. The above is on the assumption you have a build up of black exhaust carbon on it and nothing else sorry?

  17. Finally got the surround off, this is what i meant.

  18. Little hard to tell but it might well be the chrome coating that is coming off. Is it holes or lumps?

  19. I thought it was a grime but i really dont know. i left metal polish on for a an hour ou so and it started to peal the chrome off around them bottom.

    This is the result anyway.

  20. I would suggested the chrome coating has pitted & has started to come away. Polish must have been getting under it and accelerating this. Needs re-coating or filling then spraying another colour. might be able to get it carbon dipped?

  21. Right, thanks for the help.. looks like ill have to get it re done in a way, im not a fan of carbon and the chrome makes it looks that much better. Ill sort it some way im sure! Just a pain when you like everything to be right!

  22. Yes, think you just call the Wolverhampton dealer in his absence and mention the forum for the discounted price.

  23. Is the 114 the discount price??

  24. Yes

  25. Right, awesome, thanks buddy

  26. Did you end up trying that chrome paint?
