250 Car engine has cut out, need help identifying cable from battery!

  1. Hi all,

Driving home from work this afternoon and lost the power from the engine, although it was still driving and pulled slightly when I pushed the accelerator, sounded like a flapping noise coming from the front. There was nowhere to pull over and then had to then stop due to traffic and at that point the engine has stopped. Had to start it back up due to where I was and it started again after a small push of the throttle but it wasn't healthy. When it started back up there was grey smoke coming from the exhaust when I pressed the throttle. Managed to nurse it down the hill I was on and pull over, the engine has cut out straight away again so I left it off.

Anyway the guy from AA has turned up and tried to start the car, ticked over for a second and then it stopped. Opened the bonnet and there was a bit of smoke coming from the red battery terminal and it was very loose. He's tightened it back up but it wouldn't start from then on, even with a jump from the van. He tested the terminal points and turns out there is no power to the left connection from the red terminal but there is to the other two. He said it's a fuse on the back of the battery but I can only see a thick cable coming from the connection and then disappearing into the engine somewhere! So I'm just wondering if anybody knows where the cable goes and if there is a fuse what rating it is? I've attached a picture to make what I've said a bit clearer! Hopefully it isn't anything too serious but the car did not sound good. The AA guy said he thinks this battery issue was the cause of the engine cutting out but I'm not sure.

Any help or advice will be very appreciated, thank you! Attached picture below.

  2. Earthing problem??
    Will it jump start ??
Sorry just read your post again and it wouldn't jump
Did he check the voltage from the battery

  3. Hi mate, no the car won't jump and that's the only connection that doesn't have any power so I'll have to replace that regardless now! Got my mechanic coming Saturday morning but can't see him being able to do anything without that replaced! Can hear a clicking when you try to start the car so think the starter motor is fine

Edit - yeah he checked the voltage and it was fine across all the battery connections except for this one

  4. In your photo main supply fuses are in box to right with bar code sticker

  5. Take the wire off and put it on the terminal beside it and see if it starts. Theres a good chance if that was loose the contact at the bottom will be burnt.

  6. Yeah I thought so bobsan, judging by the number of cables coming from the bottom of the box too. Okay Jamie can try that tomorrow cheers!

  7. I'm wondering what the grey smoke from the rear would have to do with electrical fault? car struggling maybe?

If it's electrical, I would also check the inline fuses that are attached to the black plastic cover that hooks over the back of the battery.

  8. Yes the inline fuse was broken on the back of the battery James when we checked. Still not sure what happened to be honest, car is in the garage now though being sorted. Thanks though!
