Calipers, or kits...

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by neilrs, Jun 3, 2016.

  1. Does anyone know of any other brake kits for the Megane that include the option for black calipers? Decent ones... I think Performance Friction have dropped theirs, can't see one on Alcon's site... google doesn't find me anything else I've heard of

Or, is it possible to order the Renault kit from Brembo direct?

Basically I quite fancy having black calipers and rather than painting, as I think the brakes are going to get destroyed at some point so a new kit will no doubt be needed anyway, I could just upgrade now

  2. Brembo Gran Turismo brake kits,I'm sure they have caliper colour options but I THINK the discs are near enough stock size.

  3. Will they fit without any aggro?

Excuse my complete lack of understanding but is there some kind of caliper measurement or hub dimensions to take into account?

Can find the dimensions of the discs no problem but am thinking more about what else the kit connects to and whether it'll work

Or... is there a company I could ring that are good on this kind of thing?

  4. Painting is the best option. If you want the rear TRW calipers to match, you also have to do the calipers carriers as well.

  5. yup, paint them, some decent heatproof caliber paint, new stickers off eBay and some high temp clear, job done

    L-1011 likes this.
  6. Yeah that sounds like hassle ....

I'm thinking two piece discs, then see if I can find a price for replacement calipers and pistons and seals etc

Surprised AP or Alcon don't do an off the shelf kit for the car

  7. Should think Reyland will do an Ap Kit. They did me one for my M3. Black Calipers were the cheaper option.

  8. Have fired them off an email, as I see they have larger discs and they mentioned AP in the description so am hoping they have a caliper that works... but I guess it needs to fit the mounting bracket for the car

Can I ask why? The stock calipers are more than upto the job with proper pads, discs and cooling.

I havnt even seen any of the hardcore mk3 Meganes on anything other than the stock Brembos.

  10. What cooling set up are folks using? I seem to remember seeing a flap that could be removed.

  11. After Snetterton, my brakes are feeling the abuse and still vibrating so I'm looking at options

They got very, very hot and on track, although I don't think I lost any stopping power, they were really vibrating and that's not the best for confidence levels

I also have a monochromatic car and rather than paint, which seems expensive (sent off to someone) or a load of aggro (DIY), I'd rather just get new ones

Thus if I'm looking at bigger discs, I would hope there are calipers to match

Also, define a "hardcore" Megane. Race cars need less stopping power as they're lighter. They may also be running less power, so they don't have the same weight to stop from the same speed.

I'm talking about cars running 350 plus, there's even a few running close to 500 on stock Brembos.

I personally see it as a waste of money

  13. What's wrong with 355 mm discs with the standard Brembo 4 pots if you really have to have bigger discs?

  14. Where are these cars? I can't find any info on builds etc - are they on other forums or in Europe or something?

Would be keen to see what they have done mods wise

I've definitely chewed these discs in a single day so am keen to sort out the heat issue

Aero - nothing, but they aren't black. I know I sound like a bellend, but I quite fancy black calipers

    So options are:

    1. Maybe AP do some calipers for the 355 discs reyland have. If so, and they're black, job done - whole kit, no aggro

    2. I'll buy another set of calipers, get them powder coated, then put them over the bigger rotors and fit to the car, then re-manufacture the existing calipers and have some spare

Btw are those TRW ones above the correct ones for the rear, or do the cup models have different rear calipers?

Send your calipers to brakecaliperrefurbs, get them to do them in black. Refit them, address cooling and away you go.

I run aggressive pads and even they don't chew though discs in one day so I'd suggest sort some cooling, or have a look at using them more effectively and manage the heat.

  16. Use them more effectively? Lol the judgement is strong!

Got any links to these 400+ builds btw?

Not really judgement. Thats going on the fact that every Megane bar one that i know of that is used hard on track is still on stock callipers.

Dijon Auto racing have built a few, As have RS-Racing.

  18. I'll take a look

Also see what I'm saying - not fussed about the stock calipers per se, just want black ones, so if I can buy others then it's easier than painting

I fail to see how its easier though LOL. There isn't an off the shelf kit. I spoke to AP and Alcon previously about doing kits for the Megane and they said they had considered it then binned them off as realistically there was no market for it.

Im struggling to understand how charing the complete front setup to something that will require work to fit, Is easier than getting them painted

  20. Maybe you're misunderstanding me, as I'm taking the path of least resistance to get to the point of:

    - black calipers
    - two piece discs

The Brembos are fine, so if there is no AP caliper that can fit the Meg and go with the 355mm or 348mm rotors (for former of which look to be made by AP, hence why i'm wondering if there's a caliper that'll fit), i'll just get a new set of Brembo calipers, send them off to be painted, then get the 355mm rotors and have it all stuck on

Then the calipers currently on there i'll send off for re-manufacturing, painting etc, and i'll have a spare set

Ah my apologies, I didn't even clock on about the two piece discs.

PFC discs and Refurbed Brembos then.

Saying that I'm not even sure that 2 Piece are worth it on these, I was set to buy some but after a recent visit to Raeder Motorsport ill probably just stick with Plain OEM discs

  22. Hoping the 2 pieces help with heat dissipation. Certainly have on my other cars... we shall see

  23. I have a set of RS250 Brembos for sale that are in good condition and you could get repainted. Just bought them but have had to change my plans recently so I don't need them just now.

  24. Cool - how much? Drop me a PM
