R26 Brake pins jammed!!

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by Frimley111R, Apr 6, 2017.

  1. Tried to change the front pads and found the pins to be stuck solid. I cut the pins which released the outer sections but the sections on the inner part of the caliper are totally solid. Now I have an undriveable car, luckily not my only car.

How the hell do I fix this short of a blowtorch or new calipers??!!!

Get a set of punches, that's what I had to do. Get plenty of WD40 or that spray that freezes and releases on it too.

  3. I've got some but fuck me these things are solid. I tried drilling them out but its hard and I don't want to end up drilling into the caliper.

The punches I have are shorter, do people buy longer ones and put it through the outer hole too? Complete PITA. I have so fun booked for the weekend in the car but that's looking like a 'no-goer' already. FFS

  4. When I did mine on my old 225 i used a punch and a sledgehammer. I had to hit it so hard I was worried that I would knock the car off the axle stands!

  5. Most people end cutting them out, and replace with mr pink pins.

  6. ^^^^ what he said.

Get Mr Pinks pins - I saw your post on FB but I didn't post cos cba with comment notifications

  7. Smash them out, then buy Mr Pink pins. Never had a problem with mine since

  8. As above, smash out with a punch and get mr Pink pins, it'll be the last time you faff about with them!

  9. Right, probably going to give up and pay £350 for new calipers. Pins basically seem welded in place.:rage: I have tried using a punch but I am just wrecking the inside of the caliper now. WD40 no help. Seriously pissed off.

  10. its unfortunately a very common problem..my callipers have dents on them form getting the damn pins hammered out.

  11. On mine when i tried to punch them out, one bent in the middle, so had to cut it and use a long punch through the outer hole and drive the other off.
What i found best was literally a fucking he man swing with a lump hammer - make sure the cut end of the pin is straight and that the pin itself is straight and not bent otherwise you wont have much luck. as mentioned above i did think i may knock the car off the axle sands!

If all else fails try using a heat gun on the calliper then hit it again.

As above again though my callipers have dents in from the punch slipping etc.

    WD40 won't help anyway.

Get some penetration fluid like plus gas.

  13. Got them soaking in penetrating oil but I'm not hopeful. Not one of them is moving. I have probably wrecked the inside of the OSF one now.

Tbf I would of used some penetration fluid and heat before properly setting about them with the hammer and punch.

  15. I think I actually have some of these pins.

  16. Bit late but fluid on them now. Getting quotes for new calipers too.

I have small blowtorch but, without trying to sound thick, do I heat the metal around the pins to get it to expand?

  17. Heat the pins only heat will travel through its length which should hopefully reduce damage to the paint and caliper

  18. Plus gas, heat gun, punch and lump hammer - don't waste your time with a regular claw hammer as it won't have enough force. Got mine out the other day but the heat gun made all the difference. Use the highest setting on the heat gun and heat the pins only. Try and keep the heat gun moving (don't hold it in the same area for too long) so as not to damage the calipers. Also, turn your wheel to full lock for each side. Someone mentioned that this reduces the movement of the caliper when you're hitting it which allows you to apply more force and get the pins out easier.

  19. And if you do end up getting new calipers, maybe go for rs250 ones to give a silver lining to this sorry saga?!

  20. Going for red ones, pair for £330. Ouch.
