I am talking to Shaun at SWMotorsports http://www.swmotorsports.co.uk/ to get a half cage for my car and asked about any discount for forum members. Here's his response below. Hi Paul, We have done a good few of them in the past if you could organize a group buy Id be willing to do you guys a run of them , the double rear cross type with harness bars would be £450 or £550 powder coated in any colour. 5 + units id knock 10% off and 10+ units 15% All bolt in, made from MSA/FIA grade tubing and MSA compliant. Best Regards, Shaun Anyone interested please come back as I would like to have an idea of interest. Cheers
Great stuff, I was looking at there site as they do a lot of BDC drift car cages and a lot of lads in the civic cup too I was looking towards a full cage but this sounds really promising, and pictures of design?? Dan
Shawn is sending me some pictures which I will post when I have them so that we all know exactly what's on offer. My understanding is that it will be the "R" replica in style and standard so NOT a "show cage".
Have spoken more with Shaun, The cage design is as a one-piece bespoke unit (seats out to fit). Suggested design would be as follows. Hoop. Single cross member in hoop from lower passenger side to overhead of driver. Cross beam mounted to rear suspension points 2x "fore and aft" members from rear cross beam to overhead hoop. 2x diagonal braces from hoop to rear suspension mount inside the "fore and aft" members. Powder coated in choice of colour = £550 + 10% discount off 5+ units / 15% discount off 10+ units This is a design that we have spoken about so that you can protect the driver, have a strong cage and get access to the rear seat area from the passenger door side to load / carry track wheels. Other design adjustments are possible the only consideration is that "more" work is an additional charge. ie: Double cross member on the hoop would be +£100 but could be worthwhile if you always have a passenger on-board. Any small adjustments or ideas welcome in the design stage so please let me know ie: camera mount, etc.. Harnesses can be attached to the rear cross beam or to the rear floor points as preferred. When there are 5+ firm orders, deposit is required and a volunteer car to take to Shaun to mock up the first cage and then a week later all five+ will be ready. That's it, hope that's clear, any questions?? Cheers Paul
I take it they will be mocked up in a car with a full interior (rear door cards, headliner etc.) in place ? Obviously the back seats won't be fitted.
The mock up would be done with a full interior but to get to the rear mounting points I would expect that the carpet "liner" would need removing. Not a big task. The idea is that the end product is one that will satisfy everyone and be easy to fit and use.
Very Keen.. One of the few places that did custom cages in Scotland no longer does so something like this very much interests me. Design sounds good, my main purpose for having a cage is the safe fixing of the harnesses and roll over protection so as long as they are happy the harness bar will be able to withstand the kind of load - then I'm in. I'll probably go for powdercoated in Red. Mark. - with the interior I think the only part that may be an issue is the actual roof lining - which should be fairly thin? it would be good to get the cages as flush as possible of course, and I think I'll probably removing my roof lining in due course..
Hmmm very tempted. Had to be now though didn't it lol. when would this be likely to go ahead providing there's enough people? I was hoping to look into one later in the year but can make exceptions haha.
Hi all ive had a half cage fitted in my r26 by Shaun last year and iam more than pleased with it it seems much stronger than the r26.r one ill try and post some photos on of it sam
OK, Here's a picture of what I would propose as the design that would suit. It is the R26R style of cage.
Looks perfect (with the cheeky addition of the harness bar as mentioned initially) - nice to have it attached to the rear wheel arches also. 100% in R26 Man - you can put me down as a firm - ready to order when you are mate.
OK...based on this design with harness bar as requested I will go back to Shaun and discuss further. Based on this design being agreed by Shaun and for £550 less the discount could I ask for numbers of definite orders of those willing to pay a deposit please ..oh and choice of powder coat colour! We would also need a volunteer car near to Leyland, Lancashire PR25 2ZF who would be willing to use their car for the initial mock up... Hope to hear from you all soon, Have a GREAT weekend R26Man
Found a picture of a Pug with a design that should suit us all (I think?) if the rear cross member was mounted to the same points as the R26R cage is. Any comments please. Cheers
Yeah that looks good!. Happy to go with what Shaun at SW motorsports recommends in terms of safety provided etc - seems like they are very good at what they do. Saw this the other day as well - epic design for the mk3
heres some pics of rear half of my cage if it helps but way my rear diagonals are wouldnt work well with half cage as they join onto the roof diagonals like this
I don't think you want to mount it where the R cage mounts , thats only held in with 2 M6 bolts . Bolting it to the floor would be a much stronger mounting point I'm sure ... Even the weld in cage Shaun does for the megane goes to the floor , Ive got a pic of Johns somewhere
if that orange design is do-able in half cage it looks very robust with the rear mounting positions - function over form for me personally. Will go with what Shaun recommends

If it get's done....I've spent a LOT of time on it and frankly too many people talking and not enough people doing!! Good luck to whoever picks it up where I left off though.
oh yea i know that just the infamous k-tax, although i have bought from once or twice.. my full weld in multipoint only cost £850 designed, made and welded in.. not as practicable as a half though
Now that looks like a proper half cage, with nice close harness bar to boot (although a bit low looking in that picture which is probably just the angle the picture is taken from). I really don't like the design of those K-Tec cages, looks like a glorified harness bar to me which will do practically nothing of value in a roll over other than present another hazard in the cabin. I wasn't aware of this product from SW so thanks guys for this informative thread as that guy may well get a purchase from me next year.
