Had the newest addition to tvrmans fleet in for a couple of weeks, decided to wetsand this car to help improve the gloss and get rid of some of the nasty texture in the standard bmw paint. This thread isn't anything like as indepth as I hoped for but it's a lot of work so was concentrating on getting this car done so sorry it's not the most indepth thread. On arrival: Car was the given the usual wash routine, dried and rolled into the garage: Car was then clayed with a fair bit of contamination coming off: Paint measurements taken: Car was then masked up: The rupes machine and sanding discs pulled out, various grades 1500-2000-2500-3000 to see what worked best at first: So I set onto a test spot, used the laser to measure removal rates so before reading: Then 1500: Then 2000: Then 3000: You can see the improvement in gloss as the higher grit refines, back to the laser spot just from the sanding around 3 microns were removed then after removing the sanding marks this was what was left:
Sadly it was at this point I discovered not all the peel and texture was in the clear coat layer and actually in the paint so whilst it was a 50% improvement it wasn't as big a difference as I had hoped: Still the rest of the car was sanded and then onto the compounding stage to remove the sanding marks but leaving some haze from the wool pad and compound: The car was then polished with a medium pad and polish combination to remove the haze and then a finishing pad and polish was used, onto the panel wipe and coating choice: Leaving it looking pretty sharp: So onto the rest of the car, wheels off so the arches, calipers and wheels could be cleaned and protected:
Obviously this wouldn't do: So then onto the engine bay, was already pretty mint just protected really: Right hand side airbox coated, left untouched: Exhausts were cleaned up: Remaining trims coated:
Interior was then hoovered out, cleaned and then protected: Glass was cleaned then car dusted down and rolled out for the final pictures:
Little video too
Great work as always Ed. The car is now a different colour as it is so shiny, and the metallic in the sun is appearing to be more a graphite grey. Unfortunately it is outside getting wet but at least it gives me a chance to check out the beading!
Superb as always Ed, that is a big old beast to detail, in black too, you had to earn your money on that one!
