Bloody clutch slip at 50000 miles

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by adR26am, Jan 26, 2014.

  1. So disappointed with this. Clutch slipping earlier, and it's due a cambelt in April. I'm thinking of getting rid, can't be dealing with all of this so close together. That for forgetting the cambelt for a few month if it looks OK.
Please tell me there's an easy fix, something small that causes clutch slip.

  2. A clutch can go at any time really.

My old clio 1.2 went on 30k.

What happens if you change for something else and the clutch goes on that too?

  3. 50k for the clutch doesnt sound bad to me. see what price mark black can do both for.

  4. I assume these clutches are hydro and share the brake fluid?

  5. I'd make the 1 1/2 hour drive to Mark Black. It may seem like a treck, but it is worth it for someone who knows these cars. He won't charge the earth either.

  6. It's going to need the flywheel and slave cylinder too isn't it?

  7. Good excuse for smf a r clutch

  8. There was a thread on here the other day about it think it was around 700 from mark

  9. Yes it will mate, how bad is it? I drove mine for a few months until I got round to it. Out of the two I'd do the cambelt first.

  10. Slipping in 4th bombing down the slip by the BP garage on the A45. First time I've noticed it. I think it would have just slipped and slipped if I didn't change up and back off.

  11. Anyone attempted this DIY?

  12. I did a clutch change on my diesel megane not long ago on my drive, was very easy to do.

  13. Did you need special tools from Renault? I've had a google but can't find a guide.

I think to save money I'll definitely be doing stuff I know I can do myself, oil and filter etc.

  14. No just used my basic tools. I did make a little thing to lock the flywheel. Just grinded some teeth into a piece of metal. Will post a picture of it in a minute.

    Hope this helps.

  16. I didn't know you had to lock the flywheel. Is that when you bolt it back to the crank? Perhaps this isn't for me. Just trying to am think of ways to save money.

Putting all my CDs and DVDs into Magpie. Might have to sell my huge fish tank. Don't want to do that though.

  17. Would definitely think about fixing it rather than selling. It'll knock a big chunk off what you will get for the car if it needs cambelt and clutch. Mine started slipping in sixth over 12 months ago. It's still fine 75% of the time and it's done two track days and about 15k since then.

  18. mines been slipping for a few month now same as you i shit myself, but it should be fine for a while, mine only slips in 4-5th high revs or gunning it up a hill, i have a good mechanic to do mine i have the clutch and flywheel ready to go in but its finding time, i was going to go SMF and `r cluch but just dint have the funds, his missus is about to drop a kid so don't want him getting a call mid way through my car!!

  19. The clutch is very high, if you rested your foot slightly on the pedal it sometimes can sound like the clutch is slipping. Take it to a dual carriageway and put it in 6th at about 50 and boot it, with your left foot well away from the pedal to see if it is slipping.

  20. Taken from another thread.

  21. The mrs just called me after driving to work with some weird symptoms. Lack of power, quieter than normal, and the steering feels "loose". The only thing I could think of was some sort of limp-home mode but there's no lights on the dash. Wtf!

  22. There have been a few where the return spring has failed as well, giving similar results to resting your foot on it.

When doing the above out your foot under the clutch pedal and pull upwards to ensure it hasn't dropped at all.

  23. Good shout. Making sure it's 100% on its way out could be a lot cheaper!

  24. What do people think of the weird symptoms above?
I'm wondering if the turbo has packed up, and perhaps the slip last night was caused by some sort of over boost. Doesnt explain the weird steering though and I would have thought there'd be some sort of light on the dash.

  25. Need it plugging in to Renault Clip to read any error codes. Ben in Nuneaton would be a good bet for you but I don't think he has come over here from meganesport.net

  26. No codes when I read it, and when I drove it a good 15 miles no lack of power either. Happy to pull to the redline in the first three gears but from fourth upwards it definitely slips when it hits about 3000rpm. The steering seems no different to how it normally is, tiny tiny amount of play you'd normally expect.
It does seem to running a little richer for no reason though. There's more of a rumble from the exhaust and definite crackle on the overrun, if it was normal I'd love it. Sensor of some sort? I checked for airleaks with WD40 but found nothing.
I drove gently back from the petrol station, hit boost a few times and got an average of 36.4mpg. I wish it'd always do that.
    All fluid levels unchanged.

  27. Your belts due ?

  28. Cam belt due (age) in April.

  29. I was thinking has it chucked a tooth on the belt. Not so sure now with those symptoms .

  30. I'm beginning to question myself too now, was the rumble
more than normal? It does have a milltek cat back system, and has never been quiet.

  31. You can sit on the forums guessing forever it wont help anything, go get it looked at!

If it makes you feel better my clutch started slipping on my RS250 at 28k, Have done 4.5k since it started doing it along with a track day at Spa and 5 Ring laps and it hasn't got any worse, Only does it when its cold outside and low revs/high gear and even then it only does it now and again, Seems to be very random when it does it....

Shall be going uprated when i do get it done later in the year to handle more torque though

  33. Will see what the wife says when she drives it to work tomorrow.
Still quite stressed that the car requires all of this work and I only bought it two months ago.

Its all part and parcel of any performance car ownership tbh, could happen to anyone and any car

  35. I can deal with both the clutch and the cambelt, just hoped that with others saying their clutch had lasted 80000 or 90000 miles mine might be similar, giving me at least another three years. 50000 miles points to the car having a hard life from previous owners or the design of the clutch being a bit crap for a powerful car.

As for the cambelt, I'm surprised manufacturers aren't made to use chains by now. My good ol' 328i, 150000 miles and no belt to change. Clutch was expensive though, but I got ripped off.

  36. Chains can deform and stretch too though, nothing is guaranteed. Just like clutches can fail at any mileage, and do.

  37. It's a ball ache I know mate but that said as Jamie says it can happen at anytime. There aren't that many very high mileage megs that have clutches last as long as mine. Call it luck or the fact I've had it for so long and know evening about it.

My two pence would be to keep the car as it will be worth it. Fix the Cambelt first, get it serviced by a well known Renault specialist for a health check, save for the clutch as it's still useable and get the map changed to an rstuning product.

These things aren't cheap but once maintained and kept healthy there brilliant.

  38. Looks like we are keeping the car. Brian Bradshaw in town will be doing the work that I can't do, I'm going to be doing as much as I can myself now to save money.
