Hello, Unfortunatly, the front shocks of my Megane 3 RS are leaking. I want to upgrade them now since they need replacing anyway. My car is my daily with about 5 trackdays a year. Is like a simple BC racing setup good enough for this or would something like a AST or Intrax set be worth the extra money? Anyone that had to make the same choice? What did you choose, and why?
I will be replacing on Friday the shocks with standard cup ones and cooks port springs + anti roll bars. Unless you are exceeding the limit of the standard shocks, I'd stick with those.
Went with BC’s on mine a bit bouncy but nothing more than standard cup with grams springs that were on it
I have the same setup (minus the anti roll bars). Can't fault it. Feels the same as standard just a bit lower and less body roll. Bilstein B14's are another option if you want your car to be a bit more purposeful without sacrificing its daily driveability.
I have BC because they are v good value. Fitted 8kg front/4kg rear springs. I think it’s more comfortable and more planted than cup suspension with those springs, if you also run the shocks on softer settings for day to day. There is slightly more road roar noise which comes through the solid top mounts, and suspension travel is slightly less than OEM, which means it can crash into potholes more. I also cut a bigger hole in the front top suspension turrets (divides opinion on here) to adjust camber more easily. They need an accurate ride height and geometry set up once fitted, to feel really good. If you want an easier solution, just replace with new Cup suspension!
Ok, so in most cases BC racing will be good enough? I'm also using the car on track, and would like to have some adjustability, both in camber and dampers, which the stock suspension does not offer.
I had BC's on my 265, they were 10kg front and rear, mine wasn't my daily but did drive it to and from tracks. Normal road driving i set them to 5 clicks front and rear for the road and for wet and bumpy tracks, smooth tracks like Donington in the dry would be anything from 20-30 (Full hard) i would say if you are using as a daily then 8kg front and 4kg rear would be good and still run 5 clicks for the road.
It will all depend on how you set them up, the travel of the BC's against standard suspension is shorter, so has to do more work in a shorter distance. On my R26 with the DS's i found it was quite harsh over bumpy roads, i then lengthened the rear shocks to give it more wheel movement off load, i mean like when you jack the car up the wheel drops down more, that has made for a much better feel on the road.
so Ive just refreshed the cup shocks and dampers and added gram lowering springs. I feel that the ride is better now than with the standard springs. On track the suspension was fantastic and even with road tyres was keeping up with a couple of meganes running BC's. Im due to fit some silver project top mounts which will give me camber and caster adjustment, with these Im not sure the BC's would be an improvement. Judging by what it was like on track I think I would have the edge on BC coilovers with my cup pack, lowering springs and adjustable top mounts. serious track cars then defo go for a more expensive aggressive coil over setup but the cup suspension when tweaked is very impressive. On the road its comfortable enough as well
Thanks, im currently running h&r monotubes, which i love the ride of, but my front passenager has started leaking from the bottom of the strut, caused from a couple of bad pot holes that side has seen. Just weighing up my options. Currenty the arches sit just above the tyres, so not mega low.
