Bangernomics - Clio 1.5 DCI

Discussion in 'Other Projects' started by V7RBJ, Nov 27, 2014.

  1. There is something quite satisfying in running a cheap cheap car than costs a minimal amount to keep on the road. In my case it enables me to enjoy my R26R. As such I run an 04 reg Skoda Fabia VRS Diesel every day.

My girlfriend drives a 55 reg Clio 1.2 but I thought she could still be subject to a cheaper motoring. As such I picked up a 51 reg Clio DCI of a friend that was selling it on EBay. He had resisted my offer of £250 and i ended up handing over £450.

The intention was to fix the few niggles with it, get the girlfriend to drive it and for her to agree to me selling her clio in exchange for the DCI.

The DCI is extremely frugal, one fill up should last around five / six weeks for my girlfriends use, its £30 a year to tax and adding it to our multi car policy was only £140 a year. My friend has recently added a towbar to the car which would come in handy if I ever manage to buy the jetski ive wanted for years.

I have already given it a service, new glowplugs, oil, filters etc and sorted the tracking which had led to uneven tyre wear. I suspect the EGR valve needs cleaning out to clear the dash of a warnign light but after that it should (fingers crossed) be all good.

    Cost to date:
    Car - £450
    Tracking - £37
    Service Parts - £65
    Years Tax - £30
    Insurance - £140

    Total - £722

I thought I would create the thread to update with any issues, I may have questions around repairs and fixes in the future and to see how well the bangernomics ethos really works in the real world.

i run a saloon diesel meg daily, utterly terrible haha!

truth be told it does its job and for 800 quid 4 months ago I've not spent a penny on it nor washed it yet. should have it serviced mind.

  3. I used to run an '02 Ibiza PD130 (identical to the VRS under the dress) and remember it being good on derv and cheap to run - i used to get around 55mpg even with a remap to 175bhp.
The only things to look out for are the voided rear wishbone bushes splitting - replace them with the solid ibiza cupra ones for pence more than the standards, the variable vanes on the turbo sticking open causing overboost at low and rpms throwing it into limp mode (easy fix if you take the exhaust side of the turbo off and clean the coked up vanes up with bbq cleaner!) and the lower intercooler boost hoses popping off. If the hose lugs damage the intercooler and smooth the bore off, it holds in place with a couple of jubilee clips.

  4. Does a a4 3.0tdi Quattro automatic count with a cheeky remap to around 260bhp  , returns somewhere around 25 mpg knocking about,

    Not quite bangernomics LOL!

I ran a 1.2 Corsa last winter, Paid £200 quid for it and blew the engine eventually then scrapped it. Only cost me fuel and £50 all in

  6. Ooh ok tuff its stopping over winter now ,might even get a stay of execution and get a tow bar fitted and become the dedicated tow barge
