Just after advice guys. Looking at getting a valliant 837 fitted. ( same place as the current baxi105e instant. Easy install in loft outside wall.) What's opinions on cleaning filters? Magnaclean? Magnabooster? What about line scale reducing devices? (We're in a hard water area) Just after this boiler lasting. Cheers.
Good choice on the boiler. I wouldn't fit anything other than a Vailant or Worcester. I always fit a MagnaClean or Fernox scale reducer too. Won't do any harm to fit an inline scale reducer, although I'm not convinced they make that much of a difference TBH.
I'm about to change out boiler too. How much roughly is a power flush as I think it would be a good idea to get all the crap out before spending £1500ish ?? Replacing the boiler.
Magnaclean or the fernox tf1 generally seem to be the most popular. But the market is literally swamped with them now. But definitely worth the money if you see what they get out. Generally I don't believe the scale reducer does a great job either. A Water softener is the only option to erradicate limescale completely. @Mentalpen. Power flushing the proper way (not a hot flush) is all dependant on the size of the system. Prices vary quite alot. But generally speaking anything between £200 to £400. I know some guys who charge £500. It all depends how bad a state your system is in. It may not even require it. In some cases running a sludge remover through the old boiler/ system for around a week before replacement is often all that's needed.
Cheers James. System will be 22 years old this year. Header tank is full of brown water and the pipe that leads down into the system became blocked late last year by the elbow. I ended up draining the system and then header tank before cutting the pipe and getting it all out so it defo be a benefit and that was despite me using sludge remover and inhibitor. £200-£400 isn't that bad as I wouldn't want to throw cash at a new boiler and have it ruined for a little more. I've got 8 large radiators and 6 small ones so I guess it will be nearer the £400 mark.
Check out what the quote for power flush actually means....theres a difference. One flushes the whole system from one end right through and the other (more expensive and more thorough/effective ) is flushing individual rads and then pipes. With that age system I'd go for the more thorough flush
A lazy engineer will do the first option. Everytime the right way is to do each individual radiator and connecting pipe work until the machine runs clean. Then you know it's been done right. There's every chance your system has gone without any inhibitors for the majority if its life mentalpen. So a thorough flush will be your best bet. Then fitting A filter to your new boiler is pretty much a no brainer.
The electronic scale inhibitors are a bit of a Wierd one. The idea of them is they charge the water to stop the calcium dropping out and scaling the pipes. The reason why they generally don't work so well on hearing systems is the charge doesn't last that long, hence for little through flow systems, the calcium still drops out, and from what I've heard is very sensitive to incorrect installation...
Just thought i'd update my situation, so we are getting a worcester 18ri (wall made good), each rad flushed individually and then full system + header tank removed / cleaned, thermostatic valves to each bedroom and magnaclean fitted + inhibitor as well as any isolating cocks replaced as necessary. All for £1600 from a mate of a mate. Quite a wait tho as he is very busy which can't be a bad thing.
That's a fair price. You staying with the open vented system? (Ie Tanks staying). Most swap to combi boilers now to free up space in the home.
Yeah we spoke about it but the airing cupboard is landlocked so the boiler couldn't go there. If it was to stop where it was he'd have to change the gas pipe going in as its too small and would either have to remove/break tiles or run a larger pipe outside. He asked if we ever run out of hot water which we don't and then looked in the airing cupboard and told me we had the newer pipe layout. It was around £300-400 more to do the combi boiler but as we didn't run out of hot water and I really didn't want pipes run out side I decided to keep to the same. The main reason tho is we suffer power cuts due to there being one sub power station short in the area so we get to keep hot water when its off.
aright, what is the problem with the current boiler ? how old is it ? baxi's are normally cheap to fix ?
