Hey guys, wonder if anyone can help I've got an annoying clicking noise coming from the front of the car, happens when sitting stationary with the car running turning from lock to lock. The car passed its mot yesterday with no advisories so they obviously didn't see an issue with whatever is it. I have already replaced track rods inner and outer and the steering rack bush which leads me to believe it's either (having read on here) steering rack or cv joint, both of which will be expensive if I gamble on which to replace and get the wrong one, is there a way to tell which one to replace? O/S driveshaft was replace 3 years ago but may of gone again....
I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but I think the hub bearings click when they're worse for wear. That's maybe why it's not been picked up as unless you know what you're looking for it wouldn't be noticed.
Sounds like Mark has it right, if the bearings are dried out and worn they will most likely do this. Can you jack the front up and see if you can turn the wheels lock to lock using your hands. Or if you can, disconnect the track rod end ball joint from the hub, and see how freely the hub turns. Do you have any problems with the steering self centering after corners when driving? C.V. joints usually only click when on full lock and driving away from a standstill so unlikely to be those.
No issues with the steering self centering whilst driving, passenger side was apart last week for the track rod replacement so I know that side is free to move will have to jack it back up tomorrow to confirm about the drivers side. If I do find it to have play/difficulty to move where would you recommend I take the car to be fixed? I live in Salisbury....
