Air con drain - bottom tray removal

  1. Hi, I think my air con drain is blocked ax when I undo the two screws on the bottom of the air con unit and tilt it, water runs out. At some point I'll take the seats out and carpets/foam but not right now as I won't be able to quickly dry everything. I'll wait for some sunshine.
Anyway, I didn't really want lots more water accumulating over winter, so would like to clear the drain. I can remove the passenger side front foam bit but what about the foam under the air con unit? Do I leave this in place, remove the air con tray screws and just pull the tray out? Or does the central console need to come out first?
Otherwise I'm tempted to drill a hole and fit a tube/catch bottle as an interim measure.
    Thanks.

  2. For a quick solution (or at least it helps) I'd clean out the drain from under the car. I got loads of crap out of mine that way, it does hurt your wrist tho as it's awkward to get too coz of exhaust

  3. Thanks Maccy. I managed to find a picture now of the air-conditioning drain under the exhaust/heat shield. I'll make sure that's cleared out first.

  4. It is possible from the top. The bit of foam underneath has to come out but mine was pretty wet so I used rage to rip it out and threw it in a hedge. Never bothered to put it back in although it would be easy to do so. I used a bendy drain rod and pushed all the shite out the bottom although mine was so packed that I had to dig some of it out with a baby screwdriver which was nice...

You need to remove the tray thing on the bottom of the unit to get to the drain. Getting it out is the easy bit, getting it back in again is a test of patience that may as well be included as part of SAS training or maybe as some kind of torture.

If I did it again I would rather do it from the bottom even if it meant removing the entire exhaust blindfolded. You really need to get the foam out of there even if you just plonk the seats back in as it will absolutely stink and go rancid if you leave it damp.
