A DRL retro-fit question...

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by trismotteram, Feb 12, 2015.

  1. I've got a friend that fits 'halos' as a hobby/side earner. He's fitted a pair to a spare set of fogs for me but now comes the wiring up.
I want to use them as DRLs (since all modern cars now come with them under EU law? I'd like to give the car a hue of youth) and, although they aren't dazzlingly bright and they're aimed naturally downward, I'd rather them be on permanently with the ignition.

I'm not sure of the specifics (with regards to MOT etc) but I'd rather they do stay on, but dim when the dipped beams come on (which I leave on auto anyway) - not just for legal purposes but because I don't want it to come off as 'chavvy'

Anyone have any idea how to wire them up to come on with ignition live and dim (but stay on) with dipped beam? Currently the only cabling is a 12v + & -.

  2. That was the one I remembered seeing (but couldn't find)! Haha. A bit too rich for my taste (although I would love it to be as plug and play as that).

I knuckled under and ordered a kit online, from a UK olace that just makes these modules specifically. Sent it to my guy to test on his car before I'm next his way. Hopefully have some pictures to show soon.

Remember... they will dim 50% at night.

  4. They look good.

  5. Cheers. Since they're on a spare set I'll ask him if he wants to keep my originals so he can do them on an exchange basis, if anyone else is interested (will have to find out if the fogs are the same across the whole range of Ph1 and Ph2).

  6. Well done, they look pretty good

  7. I like those. Whats the cost of a pair? Do you fancy doing a few sets?

  8. Not sure on cost yet as it's a friend doing them; he's been doing things like this for a while (halos and even retrofitting projectors).
Once it's all up and running (and he's had chance to reverse engineer the wiring module to make those himself too) I'll try and find out if he can do them and at what price.
