This is going to be a little long winded so I'll try and keep it to a minimum. My 225 trophy on a 55 plate has just over 60,000 on it, just before I bought it about 2-3 months ago the garage I bought it off fitted a new clutch, flywheel and release bearing. When I test drove and bought the car it had literally done zero miles from the clutch being fitted. It drove well on the short test drive I did, bought the car and drove it home (approx. 6-7 miles in total including the test drive). The car was sat at home for about 4 days until I taxed it. I drove about 20-30 miles on its first outing and the gear changes were getting progressively harder, my wife took it out later that evening and gear change was almost impossible. It went back to the garage 3 times getting the clutch in for a re-bleed. It was pretty good for the first day or two after it was done but the clutch pedal was sticking down halfway through a gear change and would only pop back to it normal position if you either quickly let off the throttle or hooked the clutch pedal back up with your foot. On its third time in for a re-bleed it seemed like they'd finally sorted it and I'm guessing they were chasing an air lock somewhere in the system the whole time. However they hadn't tightened the gearbox sump plug up properly and its been weeping ever so slightly, that has since been nipped up correctly and stopped leaking. I have recently had a blast of my mates normal 225 megane also a 55 plate the same as mine but his has around 90,000 miles on it and his gear changes feel a lot smoother than mine. I've been reading about similar problems with 225 meganes on other forums and many owners were saying a gearbox oil change has made a world of difference, its booked in on Tuesday to get this done so hopefully does sort it out, but I've also read it needs a specific oil, can any of you guys in the know comment on my situation so far and also help on oil type and quantity as I've been told its not a fill till overspill situation with these 6 speed boxes? Any and all help will be appreciated as I feel like I'm at the point of putting it up for sale if I can't get anywhere with it, and gutted as I really like the car. Cheers, Dan
as for the oil i just ent for the renault standard total oil which is the same company as elf. it should be 75w-80. Was a hell of alot better when it was changed out. they usualy say buy 3L but i only used 2L and you basically fill it untill you see it as if it would spill out the hole. but when refilling your car has to be level so that you dont overfill! very easy to do.
Excellent cheers denbers!! I'll try and get some of that ready for Tuesday. Also something it does 'sometimes', is when you're sitting in neutral, and pull the gear stick to either the left or the right, sometimes it feels quite free and springs back to the central position, other times it feels a bit stiffer and doesn't return back to the central position without a little helping hand
to me that would sound as if its not filled correctly with oil. did you not get parts and labour waranty from the garage you bought it from? usually its a standard 3 month one.
Mine was like this when I first got it. I stripped the shifter mechanism and drilled the nylon bush out 1mm. Made a short shifter while it was out too. Just drilled the hole 20mm closer. Regreased it all and it works perfect now.
James I love little brucie bonus fixes like this. However looking at that I haven't got a clue where what or why that mechanism is, how to get it out or which bit I'm fixing on it. Sorry for being such a newbie to these megane problems
I was just about to put a thread up asking about this. I recently bought a meg 225 that has been sat for a long time and needs a fair bit of work to see it straight. I finally had a chance to move it onto the drive to work on it today and the gear change was ridiculously stiff. To the point where as I got it into reverse, the plastic mechanism under the gear lever let go. Is the stiffness normally with the mechanism or the gearbox its self? Also if anybody has the shifter cables and box for sale I'm now in need of them
Its the gear selector mechanism on top of the gearbox. Makes s huge difference to the gearchange on a Megane. Search for short shifter. Loads of info on it and everyone who has one loves it.
When its in tomorrow getting the gearbox oil changed the mechanic is also going to strip that selector mechanism off the top of the gearbox and drill out the nylon bush and grease it all up, so hoping that help too. I have emailed him bits and pieces I've found on here regarding the removal and drilling of the bush but can't find a specific 'how to' guide. I have also PM'd Andrew regarding getting a quick shifter exchange done too, but the fixing of the bush and oil change will have to do for now.
