225 lux Steering clicking (not on full lock)

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by zorganator, Jun 3, 2014.

  1. Hi, as the title says i have noticed a loud clicking noise when turning the wheel either way when moving slowly to park. The noise is very sporadic and does not happen all of the time. Has anyone had this problem before? What could be the culprit?

When searching for threads i can only find ones relating to clicking on full lock......

  2. It'll probably be the air bag wiring ribbon behind the steering wheel if that's where the sound is coming from. Sounds like a clicking/scratching sound. It'll probably go eventually. I believe they are 180 to buy new.

  3. As Joe says it's the Squibb behind the steering wheel,
Had mine replaced in January, when it breaks airbag and service lights pop up.

  4. The funny part is, mine sounded quiet bad when I first got my car, yet six months on and it hasn't broken and the noise seems to have gone!

  5. Thanks will check that out.
The clicking can be heard outside the car when it happens so do you think this will still be the airbag loom / squib?

  6. If you can hear it outside the car then I doubt very much that it's the squib. With the squib you can hear it's directly behind the steering wheel. I'd either jack it up and put it on axle stands or get it on a ramp and get someone to turn the wheels and examine it underneath.

Yeah if the noise is audible from the outside the SRS clockspring is unlikely to be the issue and more likely to be something along the lines of suspension top mounts/bearings.

  8. I had a clicking noise and it turned out to be the steering rack bolts just needed tightening up a bit. The rack starts to slip when they are not tight and jumps against the metal hence the clicking noise

  9. i think that might be whats up with mine, i jacked the car up and used a rubber mallet against the hub carrier and there was a rattle coming from around the strut area. when i go onto full lock you can hear it clicking however its only on full lock
are the top mounts easy to change ?

They're not bad providing you can get the strut off and have a spring bench. If not pay someone to do it because the energy in these springs will hurt (alot)!

To be fair brand new ones aren't that quiet!

    The squibs that is....

  12. the noise does not happen all the time so could it still be the top mounts/bearings as I would of thought these would produce the sound all of the time if they were faulty? Will have to get underneath and have a look....

  13. a few people have said this online so will check these bolts to, are they easy to get to?

No, you will find that when it's wet that the noise isn't anywhere near as bad as when it's warm and dry... the water acts as a lubricant.

  15. I see.... dam it lol

Will have to have a check over then...

are top mounts/bearings expensive to replace?

The top mount kit is around £134 but you can buy the bearing unit on its own for around £40.

Ideally the fault needs properly identifying before you spend anything though buddy.

  17. thanks for that. Yeah will defo get it checked out and confirmed first before spending more money lol I love the megane sport but to keep it on the road and maintained seems to cost an arm and a leg :worried:

I know this all too well having x3 Renault vehicles in our house and working with them everyday. This is also why most "mint examples" aren't actually mint as the cost of proper servicing it ridiculously high so most owners are advised to compromise on parts quality (or just ignore a fault all together) meaning cars need more money spending than they're worth.

The Meg II RS is a great car though when you see past its minor niggles and thankfully most of my customers aren't scared to pay to maintain them properly.

  19. Totally agree, there is no point compromising on parts etc as you will pay in the long run. I have invested a fair bit of cash in the Megane now to get it to the stage where it is running as it should be. I took a risk buying it without service history but now I know its being looked after as it should. I have replaced most major parts and service it often due to the miles I do on a daily basis. All work carried out by Doncaster Diagnostics who are Ktec's northern partner.
Will advise once I get to the bottom of the clicking sound.

  20. I had the same clicking type noise coming from one of the front hubs. it sounded more when reversing and turning the wheel. and seemed a bit clanky when driving over a speed bump.

Took it to mark fish and it turned out to be a seized track control arm. and slightly worn steering rack bushes.. made a world of difference when fixed.

Mine did it when turning at slow speed, both my cv boots had come loose. Regressed one at BTM and sealed it but didn't have time to so the other. Generally it's them if you can hear clicking outside.

This thread reminds me though I need to refurb my steering bushes.

  22. will check both boots at weekend to see if they have come loose......should be an easy fix if its them...
