250 1st and Reverse Gear Problems

  1. Occasionally i get a really weird problem that is impossible to replicate because it just happens once in a blue moon and randomly. The problem is if I put car into 1st gear the car is expecting 1st but it somehow ends up in reverse gear and sometime vice versa, if I select reverse it ends up in 1st. Either way the car gets confused as it thinks it's in a gear it isn't and throws warning messages on the dashboard which then goes away when car is in the correct gear. It happened a few times few years ago and hasn't happened since the other day it did it again. Any ideas what this can be? It's very frustrating because I was at a red light put it into 1st but it went into reverse lucky I noticed it and didnt reverse into the person behind.

  2. Also once in a blue moon you put it in first, it feels like it has gone into first but it hasn't because there is no bite so have to put it in neutral clutch up and back down and then back into first and then it works on 2nd or 3rd attempt. Any ideas what this could be?

  3. The boxes are a bit crude either way but the gating on the stick should stop you putting it in reverse without lifting the collar.

  4. As above, the gear linkage is a mechanical part and the collar on the gearstick prevents reverse being engaged if its not lifted...

What is the warning light that comes on the dash?
