£10k fine for motorway speeding

  1. What do you think about it? Are we still democracy? I disagree with that idea. I would rather see raised speed limits on a motorway and dual carriageway. Those limits were set years ago, when technology was quite low.

It's just the maximum fine, not likely many people will actually get it.

With regards to the speed limits being raised, I don't think your average driver can be trusted at the current limits never mind going higher. Yes cars of today are much more capable of traveling at high speeds safely, but the soft squishy thing behind the wheel isn't.

  4. Not to mention the roads are much busier than they once was years ago.

  5. You do know that the fines are only in place if you need to go to court. Its not like you can open a letter and find you have been fined 10k for doing 90 on the motorway

  7. If anything it's still not enough, £10k to a lot of the uber rich is pocket change at most.

  8. I think we should introduce minimum speeds instead... going too slow is often more dangerous than going to fast. The number of times I've been round a twisty A-road and found a car on the exit doing half the speed limit is a disaster waiting to happen.
I've had to adapt to slowing excessively for corners as a result because it will no doubt be crowned as my fault if I hit some old sausage doing 25mph on a 60mph road (with perfect conditions); even slowing to 40/30 isn't enough if visibility on the exit is poor in some cases.
Also these new laws of lane hogging need to actually be enforced.
If they made the doddery morons drive to code instead of just punishing the reckless idiots then traffic would flow much better without incident.

  9. Cruise control lanes....

You have to do a set speed, let's say 85mph, have to have cruise on, have to get out of the lane 2miles before your junction. Ideally all cars should have the merc proximity brake system as well!

Instead of cameras in the gantrys, there will be snipers, if you fail to follow the rules.

  11. I agree with Grumpy Twig, 10k maximum fine isn't enough. Court fines nowadays are means tested. £10k to a speeding owner of an Avendentor is pocket change. The fine is meant to serve as a punishment and a deterant. You do the crime, you pay the fine... simples.

I'm as guilty as anyone for exceeding the speed limit on occasions but if I get caught then I'll just take it on the chin, be pissed off with myself and deal with it. If you get caught you really have no one else to blame.

Whether or not speed limits should be raised is another issue entirely.
