250 Finally recorded the knocking sound.

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by CCowan91, May 7, 2015.

  1. This is the intermittent knock i get from the front end, can hear it from inside the car if you really listen. Every time i take it to my garage it runs 100% smooth.

Sometimes its more of a random clunk rather than this rythmic sound. Also seem to get a rattle after blipping the throttle as the revs come down?

Thing is this only starts like 5-10 seconds after letting it idle for a bit And does not do it every time i drive it. Apart from this the car drives fine, pulls like a train still (although i've been trying to stick to low rpms as this is really worrying me) Not the best video but you get the sound. This is when the engine is warm.

Just had a cambelt change along with dephaser pulley and new plugs. Engine mounts checked and fine. Oil is also full and had a service about 1000 miles ago!

  2. Sounds just like mine. You are on about the sort of metal on metal tapping/knocking sound? Sounds like the bottom end to me.

  3. What's the milage on the car?

It sounds a bit, as you said it rattles when you blip the throttle as well, as its the DMF. After some time, the DMF's springs will loosen up, resulting in a certain degree of free rotational play of the secondary flywheel. This makes a metallic rattle due to the mechanical stops on the secondary flywheel clattering to the springs.

On idle, your crankshaft does not rotate perfectly smooth, resulting in oscillation of the secondary flywheel. As you said, the rattle is not entirely rhythmic, which may be because the secondary flywheel is bouncing every so slightly back and forth on the springs in a non-rhythmic way.

Anyways, just a thought from me

  4. Nothing to worry about then.

  5. Its not even 40k on the car mate, just ticked over 39k...

My clutch pipe was recently replaced as it was leaking pretty bad, although it was caught pretty early it did flash up with Breaking System Fault as it lost considerable brake fluid due to the leak. Bled the system for the time being and was topped up to full.

Hoping this didn't cause damage to the DMF but I shouldnt imagine so cause i didn't drive it for a week once the leak was discovered until the pipe came in.. Only 2 miles to the garage to be fixed.

  6. Unsure on the mk3's but I've seen a few people have to replace their clutch/ dmf on the mk2's around that mileage

  7. Aye, I had to change my clutch at 40k miles on my mk3. The DMF already had significant rotational play as well, but we didn't bother changing it yet, and it's still going strong with now currently close to 70k miles on the clock with the original DMF, but with just the clutch changed at 40k.

Anyways, you coulnd't really have damaged the DMF. It is a pure mechanical piece of equipment anyways, and the springs and bearings are prone to normal wear and tear. It is pretty normal for the DMF to have a certain amount of free rotational play already after just a mere 40k miles.

  8. Ah okay, that's good to know about the DMF. It would make sense as I was searching in general on google and a lot of people were mentioning the DMF on people posting with similar symptoms to mine. And looking at various videos there are some with very similar sounds to mine titled flywheel knock haha.. Mostly on older cars with higher mileage mind but oh well eh. Would it be normal for this to cause more vibration when it happens, nothing major but can definitely feel a difference.

So from what TymenJ is saying basically this noise isn't causing any damage to the engine or anything else then? I've very limited knowledge of cars so excuse my dumb questions.

Good to know I could be expecting a clutch replacement soon anyways:tongueout:

  9. who did the cam belt change?

  10. Rentec in Edinburgh, its not a botched job mate they have a very good rep. Always renaultsport cars in. Car was making the noise before the change. Originally thought it could be the dephaser pulley.

  11. Ovy

Does the knock sound go or quiet down if you press the clutch in?

  12. Not that i noticed, was trying that last night. Didn't seem to make any difference. It only seems to make this noise when warmed up... Don't notice it when you first start it. Also seems to disappear under light throttle when stationary.

I dunno, really about ready to give up tbh. Nothing but **** luck with this car..

no change of sound with clutch in or out sort of rules that out also the fact it does not knock until warm sort of rules out bottom end bearings.
I wonder if it more electrical like a sensor timing related ie knock or vvt being out? Anything on diagnostics?

  14. It is a strange one, car drives like a dream other than this noise.. No noise during normal driving.

Well it's had a fair bit of work done on it recently mate, had the cambelt, water pump and vvt pulley changed. New plugs also. All about a month ago at the most. Just been in and let Rentec listen to the noise, i've had it in twicre before mentioning the noise but they were never able to recreate it. No fault codes showing on diagnostics.

Taking it in after work Monday, said they'd get it on the ramps and See if they can pinpoint where its coming from. I had a listen last night and it definately seems louder towards the bottom of the car.. I dunno whats under or around the engine that could cause this.. Any ideas?

Knock disappears with the slightest touch of throttle but you can hear a slight rattle as the revs come back down. Definately sounds like something loose..

  15. Did you ever manage to sort this or find where it was coming from ? My car makes the exact same random noise when it's warm !

  16. Just wondering.. Does the noise disappear if you turn on the AC?

  17. Sounds like the dmf from there tbh

  18. The noise doesn't change with your foot on the clutch, the AC has no affect on it either. Its just a totally random sound. The best way to describe it is like something going round in a tumble dryer randomly.

  19. Still makes the noise to this day, spoke to various other forum members and their cars make the exact same noise as well.. I've kinda stopped worrying about it for now as it seems a fair few others have been experiencing this for a while.

I just turn the car off and walk away haha. From time to time I hear like a random clunk noise as well as this noise in the video, it is quite unsettling though :tongueout:

i've not noticed the AC making a difference, how would that effect it?

  20. sounds like valve tappets to me. might have a play between them and the camshaft, you can have thicker fitted to get ride of the noise or leave with it but it means your valve open as much as they should.

  21. Mine has almost the same noise when the engine is warm enough but not that frequent like in the video. I believe it's related the the ac compressor's pulley or clutch because it goes away when the compressor is running.. Not really sure though..

  23. Mine does it too, exact same sound but mine does it from cold, it's not loud like in the link but is constantly there, apart from that my car drives and pulls fine, what's causing it because the link talks about a fix

  24. Mine drives fine aswell, I dunno but I see it says cambelt area. I've had mine changed along with the other VVT pulley.

EDIT: Looking at the link it says roller assembly. Parts replaced it seems like a different roller and various nuts etc... Click on the link on meganesport forum above to see it. So nothing major, just an annoying noise. Good to know lol.

  25. Bit of a thread revival but almost a year on I'm still hearing the noise but feel it's got slightly worse... Notice it more now I feel.

Agreed the car drives perfectly well to me and the mechanics at the Indy specialist I use.. As much as I don't want to it may be time to trade in and move on to something else as I'm worried my engine is gonna shite itself everytime I have to drive it.. Probably not but I'm tired of chasing this noise. I love the car but I'm seriously pissed off now haha.

  26. Do s search for the idler pulley, there's a few 250's with a light tapping noise! They came of the production line like that and it's nothing to worry about apparently!

  27. Mmm it does sound like it I admit, as it only seems to appear when warm but in the videos mine definitely sounds more like a knock than what I heard. A little more than a year ago I had the timing belt and the dephaser pulley replaced along with the water pump Etc. This was before I learnt about this common issue with some of the earlier 250s.

Am I f**k paying for it to be done again as this wasn't replaced at the same time! A lot of money to throw away haha. I've only done 6000 miles since my original post haha....

  28. I wouldn't worry to much about it, specially if the idler wasn't changed then I would think that it was that.

  32. hi, anybody solved this problem ? maybe rod knock/spun bearings, bad rod bearings ? mine makes same sound on idle (but its rhythmic) and when reved up just a little it sounds weird, on 2000rpm normal sound..
