High speed performance verified scientifically

    Hi all,
I´m very happy with my 2015 RS265 bought 3 years ago. Only downside is straight line performance (yes I know..) at high speed. Seems like my car is hitting the wall at ~135mph.
I wonder if any of you has tried to measure high speed performance after remaps with some kind of
    scientific mind?

I put some effort to measure my stock car yesterday using Dragy GPS (and GoPro 5 to double check) and running in both directions.
I live in Sweden which means 100-200 km/h but 60-120mph would help throw some light into what gains you get at high speed with remaps stage 1-3. Maybe hybrid turbo is the best solution to get power higher up in the revs? I would like to cut 3-4 seconds in the 100-200 km/h sprint.
Money is always an object and it´s my daily driver.

  3. Cutting 3 to 4 secs will require a significant power to weight increase

Nice. Your car is fast but probably modified beyond my means. Looks like downhill in your video? Or is it just me.
Yes, interesting to hear what performance gains people get with affordable mods though.

  5. Yes, slight downhill at the start and then the straight flattens out. But I am accelerating out of a turn rather than on a straight like in your video. So I've got about 60kW more at the wheels than standard thanks mostly to a hybrid turbo and water/meth injection.

Here's acceleration at a Roll Racing event. You get to 50km/h, light goes green to "race" then hit the finish line about 400m later at about 180km/h. In one of the runs I get smashed by a modified R35 which does 9 second passes over the 1/4 mile.

    348bhp/378bhp depending on the dyno.

That's an old run (from 4th gear with 3/4 of petrol in the tank), have to try it out now.

Probably could get it another 0.2s lower.

  7. Wow! How is that recorded? On a dyno or on a road/track using a phone app or some other method?

  8. I use Dragy to time the acceleration and a dyno (was on 2 different dynos) to measure bhp/nm.

  9. OK, so Dragy the app which relies on the 1Hz GPS of the iPhone.

  10. Not true. You use the app to time your runs using a 10ghz receiver.

  11. Nice one! Sorry, I forgot the question mark at the end of my sentence. I wasn't stating it as a fact, just a question.

As you say, the conditions is different but they will always be. We just have to keep that in mind.
Dragy did show 15°C when I did my run (car indicated 17°C in the sun) and I guess there was a lot warmer when you did the track day. Tyres you use are probably not ideal for high speed acceleration?

  15. Agree.

The tyres I was using were Yokohama A050 medium compound.

  16. I'll be going to Opatija next year for a holiday. Flying into Zagreb. Maybe I can check out your awesome car?

  17. Of course m8.

PM me couple of days earlier. I'll meet you at the airport so you don't spend money on our airport TAXI. [emoji106][emoji41]

Impressive performance, is there a thread here about your car? Can´t find any.

  19. Will open ot soon. Have a lot to write and not much time.

Not so impressive when a lot of your friends drive Stage 3 7R with <9s 100-200km/h. [emoji1787]

  20. that Dragy box looks impressive, bit odd though that neither the app or the vid above (VBOXKILLER) mention that the app is useless without the £140 magnetic Bluetooth/gps box that collects the telemetry

It is a bit sad that a boring (to my eyes anyway) Leon Cupra with just a remap is almost as fast as your RS with all it´s extensive modifications.

Even better when you chuck a few extra hardware bits on one and some suspension then go and lap the Ring about 15-20s quicker

    Cupra/GTi is a cracking chassis

  23. These new VAG cars are best(buy) when it comes to straight line acceleration.
    No question about it.

  24. The only car I went quicker than at Roll Racing was a Golf 7 R. At a guess it was unmodified. By all accounts they’re an uninvolved drive especially compared to a Renault on a circuit but I can’t say as I’ve never driven one.

Here’s how easy it is to make them very quick in a straight line:

    That´s for sure.

I didn´t notice how this Golf R was tuned.

Back to topic. More people who used accurate devices to measure high speed accerelation?

Well, at the end of July I finally did the trip from Sweden to Engine Dynamics to get the car tuned. Andy and his staff did a great job with my car.

    ED installed:
3" downpipe with a 200 cell HJS cat. (van Loon Motorsport)
    3" Scorpion exhaust (non res.)
    Wagner intercooler
    Forge Uprated turbo recirc valve
    Remap

I wanted a map that was optimized rather than maximized - in short, a safe map.
    Max duty cycle: 86% @ 6750 rpm
    Max boost: ~1,68 bar @ 4800 rpm
    Power: 301 bhp @ 5200 rpm (stock 264 bhp @5500 rpm)
    Torque: 329 lbft / 446 Nm (stock 287 lbft/389 Nm)

Performance is not that easy to measure because there are many variables.
    Anyway, I tried my best.
    Same section of road
    No wind at all
Almost the same temp. 23°C vs 24°C

    Standard vs Tuned:

    100-200 km/h (62-124 mph)
    16.20 - 14,28

    140-240 km/h (87,5-150 mph)
    37,01 - 25,92

Should have done this mod years ago..

  28. No doubt about the new mqb vag range is the quickest bang for buck in acceleration. Even the platform before mk6r and TTS very easy to run 370+bhp over 430 ft/lbs. But very boring to drive hence the swap. Didn’t do any testing on my Megane on the bahn but hit a wall at 150 are they electronically limited?

If your car is like mine the boost drops to ~1,2 bar at around 5700 rpm and I would guess there is simple not enough power to go much faster then 150 mph. Not as long as the road is flat anyway.
