Clutch renewal, is a fly wheel a must aswell?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Cavell07, Sep 9, 2015.

  1. Hey guys, looks like I may be needing a new clutch soon, seems to be slipping a bit and the release bearing looks on its last legs as well.

Basically been told by a mate that the flywheel needs to be done at the same time as the clutch. Just wondering if it HAS to be done at the same time or is it just a recommendation? Funds are a bit light atm so can't get them done both at the same time and would rather the clutch not go altogether as I need it on the road. Apologies if this is a stupid question, just want to make sure that's all.

    Cheers.

  2. Really depends on age and mileage of car but the flywheel will be a dual mass which wears out anyway so if that goes then you'll have to pay for all the labour again.

  3. Its a 05 plate on 92k.

Got a mate that can do the work so it won't be overly expensive, compared to Renault or other garages, but if it came to it I'd rather pay for the labour again instead of the clutch going completely and being without the car if you get what I mean.

May as well swap it at that mileage

  5. I'd defo get the flywheel changed aswell at 92k. It's probably pretty worn at that. As said you don't want to pay out for the labour again.

  6. Agreed the extra labour work will be a pain in the arse so I'll see how it goes, should last a bit longer anyway, so try and get them done in the next few weeks. Cheers.

  7. As long as the flywheel is within its tolerance I wouldn't bother changing it. I did a clutch on one with 88k and the flywheel didn't even have 30mm of movement. Each car is different just depends how you drive.

  8. how much are the clutch and flywheel separately?

  9. Only looked on ktec atm as I can guess Renault will be a bit more. £202 for the clutch and £358 for the flywheel. However that's a lightened flywheel and not a standard replacement.

  10. I can get a SMF for £300. Groupbuy available.

  11. gulp!!

Mines on 1st clutch and 81k miles so likely to go soon

how many hours labour is it roughly?

  12. No need to change the DMF if the rotational play is within 30mm AND the bearing does not show of axial play/movement.

Also, I wouldn't advise on using the standard clutch and an SMF, if you do intend to change the flywheel. Keep the DMF, or change it if it is out of tolerances. The standard clutch plate has not springs (thus no torsional dampening anymore in your entire driveline) and pairing it with an SMF gives you a drivetrain with 0 torsional dampening abilities. If you do want to go down the SMF route, get a helix clutchplate with 4 springs in it to retain the dampening ability, but this is a costly option.

Also, I think Renault themselves charge around 13 hours of labour for clutch + DMF (at least, thats what they report in the Dialogys system when it comes to counting labour hours). But I had my clutch changed with a friend, and it took roughly 6 hours from jacking the car up to jacking it down again

  13. So basically with Renault you can double it and add more for just the labour lol. Think I'll pass.

The labour won't be too bad as I've a matenthst cab do it for me so will be far cheaper than Renault. Its the parts that will cost me as this month I've already spent to sort other things our on the car so will see how I get on. It'll be a clutch/flywheel package I'll end up buying anyway, don't want to start moving shit up for it to go wrong and cost me more to fix.

The joys of a French car ehm although for the first 2 months its been faultless so can't complain really. Age of the car things will go.
