Hi, just wanted to introduce myself, picked up an r26 a few weeks back, very much enjoying it. I've just got 1 question which is how good should the standard brakes setup be, im finding awful brake fade when doing fast Road driving to the point where my foot is hard down and it's not doing much in terms of stopping. Pads and discs all look like there is plenty of life.
Hi, welcome aboard! In my opinion you need- Brembo HC plain discs £60 ish (OEM discs are great but more expensive) Ferodo Ds2500 pads £120 ish (personal taste but mine work great on the road. Little bit of squeal now and again) Braided lines £70 ish (I got HEL ones of ebay) If your discs are fine then just pads and lines. Hope this helps.
Welcome from kendal. Decent set of pads and a brake fluid change is the 1st thing I'd be doing if the discs are okay.
Thank you, I noticed a few renaultsport people around Kendal, I joined the Facebook group and will hopefully meet up with a few of you in the future. Will be there on Monday as my wife works in Kendal.
I would say also that the brakes are never head the windscreen sharp like on a new car. They have more moderation which i personally love. One of the guys on here was saying its because the brakes have less assistance therefore more feel. Mine are great now. Rock solid pedal, not sharp, no fade and i just use more leg power for more braking power. Hope that helps.
My brakes feel fantastic love how well they are ! Im not too sure what pads I have I think they are ds2500 ? With oem discs.
It answers my question of whether there is some cheap crap on the car and maybe some old fluid, the initial bite is smooth and nice but if you are on the brakes for a couple of seconds you quickly feel there is no further braking force possible no matter how much more leg force you use, it feels like I can easily put my foot through the floor before I could test the abs.
On my Audi brake fluid should be changed every two years. Maybe you need to change that and get better pads ?
It's not the fluid. Brakes are like that from new, or after being completely re-newed. Upgrade is the only way.
I'll check the brake fluid thanks guys, I shouldn't need to upgrade them as the more I use the car the more I realise there isn't something quite right, my wife's kia ceed 1.6 diesel has better braking performance... Lol
Welcome again from Kendal. As Jonty said get yourself along on the 6th if you can, details on the Facebook page. It would be good to meet up and have a look over your shiny new motor. If you need any work doing re brakes I would recommend Jonty in Kendal also. Maybe see you soon.
I can well believe it. My Clio 172 brakes were twice as good as either my R26 or 275 Trophy. Seriously. Wife's new diesel Clio or her old mk 2 Megane 1.6 petrol had better brakes too. I'll bet if you replace the fluid it won't make a ha'peth of difference that you'll feel.
Back to your 1st comment. Sounds like your pads are glazed if theyre feeling wooden. Or the fluid is hygroscopic, so the boiling point is lower, so overheating easier. Either way a decent set of pads like recommended on here and new brake fluid should be good enough. As long as all the brakes are working correctly (no sticking or seized calipers etc)
Thanks everyone, I think I'll do pads and fluid when back in the country, currently away on business in Greece so no time to tinker at the moment. I've re built calipers and replaced hoses fluid, discs and pads before so I'm sure I'll be able to sort these at some point.
changing the fluid as above should be a big improvement . get an uprated Dot4 fluid . If just fast road with possibly the odd trackway thrown in you cant beat Super Blue fluid for price . above that your into Motul , gulf , castrol Etc .. no real need unless your a trackday hero tho
