Rain tyres

  1. Anyone have any experience and qualified advice to give on either rain tyres or winter/all season tyres?

I'm working on the west coast of Scotland and doing approximately 18000 miles a year which is mainly motorway across moorland (think Lake District). Temperatures have had highs of 20 for about two weeks in total since January but I'd say the average is about 7-9.

I was going to fit PS3s but as its a summer tyre I'm considering getting an intermediate or wet as the daily boot now.

  2. Uniroyal rain sport 3s

  3. +1

  4. Rainsport will be dead in 20ooomiles...

  5. So that would man a new set, he's asked for a good wet weather tyre, a good wet weather Tyres will not last 50,000 miles, when their dead put some new ones on

  6. For wet use, the rainsports as Steve said that's what everyone uses as wets in treaded 1a category Motorsport but if you use them hard in dry they won't last as long but normal road use will be fine..

  7. +1 - Running these all the time on mine.... when thy die, I will replace..

  8. The PS2 is outstanding in the wet. As are most michelins, and you'll get more mileage out of them than a specific wet tyre. The uniroyals are ideal if you want to spend less. I've opted for the continental winter sport 810s for this years wet/cold season as it's more of a wet road tyre than out and out winter.

  9. I got a 230 f1 that came with 1/2 worn Michelins on. They were aweful. The budget sunnys on the back were better. I personally wouldn't waste my time or money with michelins driving in the lake district (where i live). Got pirelli p zero Neros on at the mo which seem ok. But rainsports have been the best tyre ive used in this super wet part of the country.

  10. Thanks folks!

I used UR RS on a 325i back in the day and RS2 on a 9-3 Aero after that! I guess the RS3 is the natural logical progression.

What I wanted to hear was that it suited the car and from your responses I guess it does.

20,000 miles is great! It's a consumable as far as I'm concerned. I was prepared to buy PS3s and see them done after 10,000.

Car came with some budget sports tyres that I'm wearing down quickly.

  11. PS2 better than PS3 for wet weather?

  12. Pilot Exalto 2 and Pilot Sport 3 are almost identical by all accounts. I had PS3 and they were good in the wet on my 172. I'd definitely use them again.

  13. I've never had the PS3 so can't say.

  14. Go on to Which? mags site and the Auto express site for excellent recommends for wet weather tyres.

    Cheers Andy

  15. My PSS are spooky good in the wet.

  16. Ultrac Vorti. All round tyre wet dry, imo unbeatable and last much longer then the michelins

  17. Always had PS3's however this set I have on I really havent rated them?! I don't know if you can get a bad set but they just don't feel how they have in the last years.

    PS2's for me next.

  18. PSS are brilliant in the wet:cool:

  19. I use PSS as road Tyres awesome in the rain but for a full set tyre then rain sports

  20. PSS are awesome in the wet

  21. Nothing really in it, but ps2 far better in the dry

  22. So we saying RS3, PSS, PS2, PS3 in that order?

Ultrac I assume is a Vred!?! I'll check them out.

I recon I can save £100 when fitting a set of RS3 rather than PS3. I've not checked any other prices yet.

I have to say I'm surprised by the different opinions on here. I suppose it is very subjective.

I'm also specifically looking for feedback from Mk2 owners as the results may be staggeringly different on anything else.

I'm pretty sure I have a recent evo with a tyre test in it....

We put contisportcontact 5 on the mrs Pug 207 GT recently, very impressed by them thus far and its given her the confidence she needed in the rain. Not surprised they have won another test, and as there are some good deals on them I may go with those if I get another set of wheels for some out and out dry summer tyres (like cup 2).

  24. Best balance between cost/performance/endurance is by far RainSport3. It is a tire made for British Weather. I have it on all my cars (3 of them) and all my friend also have on them. You do 20.000 miles, but you do them safely.

My diesel RS is wearing them all day with some casual track days on board and I can say they are brilliant for the price and wet performance.

  25. That's useful. What speed/load index combination did you go with?

  26. I had the conti sport contacts on my golf gtd as that's what they come with new didn't last 11k on the front.. swapped out with some terrible budgets as I only go up and down motorway in it. Plus had just Bought some tyres for race car so couldn't afford good tyres for golf...silly money vw try charging me for them when went in for service (not that I'd buy from them anyway)
the conti's were good in dry never really tested in wet

  27. I'm probably going for the RS3s.

I'm sure they will be a night and day difference from the cooper zeon ct6's that are on it at the moment!

PSS's are great BUT the soft sidewalls and shite wear rate really let them down.

I hope the PSS 2's change that, I actually prefer the feel of the PS2's over them purely on the sidewall feel

  30. Great comment mate! I tried a pair of PSS at the front but I was let down by the soft sidewalls. I changed to ps2 and felt much better in terms of feel and response. Renaultsport guys know what they are doing

  31. With the extra weight of the M9R lump at the front of mine, soft sidewalls really wouldn't suit!

  32. i have read this and its my concern if i do change from ps2, is it noticeable? I thought the 92 xl wouldnt be far off the 95xl - my mate has the m135i which is heavier on 225 88y's i think and no complaints from him

anyone gone from ps2 to pss on the megs?

  33. Just saw this, glad ive stuck with ps2s then!

Yes to both, Very noticeable. Its the one massive downside to them. Oh and the fact that grip levels change drastically once they were to <3-4mm.

Im due to replace my front ones soon and its very likely ill be back on PS2's

  35. I can confirm I do not like slicks

  36. Slicks are the best!
just have to respect the limit of grip as yes they got lots more just unlike treaded tyres there's no progression to loss of grip
    just on or off haha

  37. Had them on the Clio today, they were second hand so may not of helped, tried all sorts of pressures and no matter the steering just felt very light almost like driving on ice even after 5 laps they the steering was still light, maybe as they were old tyres, never know how they have been treated in the past.

They can go off very quickly. I did 1x race weekend with Pirelli slicks, I say one weekend as I had used them previously on a test day, then rocked up at Silverstone for the weekend. Went out on track on the Friday testing on a 3yr old set of Michlelin Cups, was running round in the high 2:30's not really happy but I was OK with that as the tyres where well past their best. Stuck those Pirellis on which had done maybe 6 heat cycles and struggled to go any quicker despite the car feeling like it was on rails in terms of stability/solid feel and all that. I talked to some of the teams and they reckoned they were around 5 to 6 seconds a lap faster when new (long track like Silverstone GP) but that this dropped maybe 1 to 1.5 seconds with every heat cycle. Ultimately it means slicks which have been used are unlikely to give any better performance than fresh 1B tyres, require rock hard suspension to work properly and can be "tricky" when its cold/wet and all that, unless one knows a user who is willing to pass on slicks with really low number of heat cycles on them. I still don't understand why people bother with them on track days, if your race formula allows one to use them though you don't really have any choice as the performance advantage of fresh slicks is just mental really.

Slicks is pretty much why I sort of gave up racing. The costs to run in class 2 of the PCGB Championship doubled over night.

  39. i use slicks as in slick class in the wsscc, i use second hand.. been using ginetta Michelins but only really gained 1.5 seconds on them over set of 1a ad08s and getting good ones is hit or miss,
using pirellis now gained another 1.5 seconds but they are softer so only last me 2-3 races and the fronts get to canvas as just cant get enough camber
but at £30 per corner its cheaper for me.. if i ran new ones it wouldnt but this way i am as even a set of list 1a's for treaded class would be over £400 per set

but steve persevere once you get a good set you'll love them..
you cars lighter than mine so dunno on pressures but i run 30psi hot, thats 24 on front cold and 26 rear cold

one guy in the lower slick class has a ignis and due to not being able to warm the rears quick enough for racing he runs A048's semi slicks on the rear
