Mid box removal

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by sonyboy, Aug 12, 2015.

  1. Hi Guys

I was just wondering how this is done. Obviously the mid box is removed but how is it then reconnected? and with what? Thanks.

  2. I'm doing my back box chop at the moment; similarly it'll need chopping / welding .

    If it were me.
I'd get some straight pipe in its place and weld the flange back on and use the existing V band to connect to cat and weld/sleeve the rear section

  3. cut the box section out, make anew section and fare the ends to over lap each end, clamp the front joint and weld the back joint

  4. Is it a 3" pipe the system?

  5. 2.25 i think

    600mm external diameter

  6. Is this for the 250?

EDIT: I should of mentioned this initially.

  7. ah no, 225/230. My bad!

  8. Just did the mid box chop and pretty disappointed. Should have put the 60 quid towards a cat back system.

  9. Standard diameter is 2.55"

  10. Midbox chop on 250/265 is well worth the money. Had my new section flanged and welded in.

  11. My mechanic who does all the work on mine who works for Renault said he will chop it out either side and then connect two pieces on in a way that if I want to ever put it back on I can do. He was talking about putting sleeves on it does this sound right? I am not mechanical in any way?

Next saturday day it's being chopped along with a full service.

Ill mo get some before and after go pro vids up.

  12. I'm getting my back box chop and that is being sleeved - just means it's removable at a later date if needed.

    cons: liable to leaking

  13. Had the mid box chop yesterday it sounds ace! Defo worth doing can't tell on idle but Rev it in normal and it sounds a lot deeper with the odd pop but put it in sport and it pops like mad!

One thing I have found which I thought it would do more is pop on gear change when taking it to the redline. It does pop sometimes but not everytime like a focus RS MK2 for example.

I also have found it has almost a rattle from the mid box area. If I Rev to literally 2k gently and slowly it rattles almost like a heat shield rattle sound. Could this be the weld isn't perfect? That's my only guess???

Ive done some before mid box chop vids so be filming after vids soon so I shall get them up.

  14. Looks good mate very clean car OG was what I wanted originally but seen red and had to have it after having a 182 trophy.

Lad who did my chop cut it and put a mm or two smaller diameter pipe in the middle and then welded it. This what everyone else has had done / correct way to do it? Never modded a car this is my first mod in 10 years of driving.

  15. Some people put a flange on so they can put the box back on if they needed, mine was fitted onto the existing pipe by flaring the ends of the new pipe and clamped down so it can be removed again if needed. Welding it would mean is permanent, its up to you .

  16. Hi I have a rs 250 really fancy doing this , where can I get it done ?

  17. just had mine done at the weekend for £50, never realised the box was so hollow inside.

Sounds good when giving the beans but almost un-noticeable when idle or driving casual.
