clonking from the back

  1. I've got this odd sound; like a dead body in by boot. It sounds like when i accelerate/change gear/pull away, it's as if something is knocking?

I know the rear brakes are knackered, they wouldn't make this sound... and there's the rear exhaust mount which needs replacing?

Being new to these cars; what other rear components are there to potentially cause this kind of sound? What should i look for? any common problems?

    Cheers in advance

  2. Nmp

    Nmp

    Rear axle bushes.

  3. For sure?
    Are they common ?

I'll have a shop around; likely to have to more questions later!

  4. Could still be the exhaust mounting. Mine went, also knocked when starting the car.

  5. This is what I thought; but I can move the exhaust with no noise at all.
Might just get both done soon enough and be done with the lot!

  6. Mine were hanging on the fabric straps not the rubber part of the mounting

  7. So i've bought a new set to replace; i took it to my mechanic today who had a listen and debated whether it was rear bushes.

The sound is ONLY forward/backward movement, no up and down sound.

booked in to be repaired in couple weeks - see what comes of it

  8. Just to update this; fitted the new rear bushes and still got the knocking noise.

I had a couple of mechanics look at it and they're adamant it's the exhaust, specifically the back box. He said he can also here sloshing? I'm thinking rusted internals, perhaps baffling moving? I'm having a box chop anyway next month so will soon find out.

Anyone else have any suggestions- the rest of the back end is in decent condition; springs, shocks etc. are all dandy

  9. Any info; anyone seen/heard of back box/mount issues similar to this?

  10. Only advice I can give is fit genuine exhaust hangers.

Pattern parts don't fit! (Unless you want to bodge them)

Check the centre hanger is not taking all the load. If it's strained then you'll need a new one there too.

Three genuine mounts is going to cost nigh on £100.

It would have to be fairly obvious if it's the exhaust. Even hanging by the cords they don't tend to knock.

Have you got a one piece exhaust from the front back?

If not then you've had a piece chopped and put in which could ran poor fitment/ may cause your issue?

  11. It's standard one piece as far as i'm aware, looking under, it looks one piece.

The knocking is still there; mechanic has had a number of pretty good tugs on it, pretty sure it's not the hangers as it's not really a tapping exhaust noise which i've been famiilar with in the past, it's a sudden clunking almost creak noise.

  12. My 08 225 is the doing the same.

It was a broken exhaust bracket (not mount) and the replacement was hitting off the underside cos the motorfactors only had one size bracket to fit the damn exhaust.

So it's still doing it, and I'm following this thread wondering if it's the bushes or suspension. Doesn't happen all the time is the problem.

  13. Interesting... Well, my car is going to y mechanic on tuesday to have the box chop sorted, i'll see if that makes any difference and also inspect the hangers a little more also.

    Will keep you posted
