225 225 OS Driveshaft Removal Guide needed

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by bootneck, Jul 30, 2015.

  1. Hi peeps, my garage cant fit me in until end of next week, so Im thinking about replacing my 225 os driveshaft over the wkend.
I've already got the new complete driveshaft, I could just do with some advice or guide on the removal procedure.
Im ok with stripping it out of the hub, its the gearbox end which I need reassurance with.
What nuts/bolts are there,is there any circlips?
Does the gearbox oil need draining first or will it just come out when the shaft is removed & where/how do I top the gearbox oil back up,what oil type/amount will I need?
I just want to be prepared,I renewed the track rod ends & rotational links other week so I know they can be undone with no issues.
Will it be ok using the same old driveshaft seal?
    Thanks in advance

  2. Replace the diff seal I didn't when replaced my shaft stupidly and it had been leaking. Had to remove all again to refit new seal. Is a hanger bearing on drivers side draft. No clips shaft just pulls out with a little tug. Drop box oil prior as saves a little mess. Top up in passenger arch need to remove metal plate if I remember 4x13mm bolts. There will be the filler plug.

  3. No need to replace the diff seal seal, just take some car when removing the driveshaft.

If your ok with the hub side of things then all you need to do is undo the intermediate bearing cap/holder it's one bolt ands on a hinge.

Once you've undone this one shaft tug and its out

  4. Thanks for the replies guys.
Ive no oil leaks so Im presuming the seal is in good condition.
So I need to find where the gearbox oil drain plug is first, does it all need draining or drain just enough to stop it coming when the seal is removed?
What sort of gearbox oil is recommended & what amount do I need?
Also do I need type of hose/funnel to get the gearbox oil in?
Ive just recently started getting the dreaded 'clicking/cracking' noise when pulling away on full lock, so Im hoping this new driveshaft will rectify it,
but Ive read a lot of owners still having the same clicking/cracking noise even after driveshaft replacement.
Ive also just renewed all the drop & rotational links,inner/outer track rods & top suspension mount.
Had new hub bearings last year, so the only other thing left is the bottom ball joint but Id probably replace the full arm.
Everything still looks in relatively excellent condition,Ive owned it 6yrs & its just hit the 60k miles.
There was just the top mount & driveshaft clicking to sort, I just decided to renew the other parts as an overall service because its time for me to sell & buy a newer car,
so wanted it all to be reassuring to any buyer

  5. The only reason why I ask if all the gearbox oil needs draining is because I had new oil put in 4000mls/8mths ago when I had a new clutch put in,
it should still be fine,so if I could, I would've only drained enough to prevent leakage when the shaft is removed.
