I think the Meg is still performing even against these much more technologically advanced , higher powered hot hatches. Plus it has the rawness which captures our hearts , which no other new hot hatch seems to have
Megane is still a hot hatch in that pack along with the Leon. The othes are more than a hot hatch I think the game has stepped up into - "hyperhatch". 300bhp is a minimum now. Whether it gets wasted or comes second I think as we all will that it's a mega car and WILL hold its own on any road and certainly track!
Or tell me whats wrong with the civic? Savage lift off oversteer? Where about in the Ribble Valley you from?
In order: Megane Trophy VW Golf R Seat Leon Civic Type R BMW M135i I haven't actually read the article be honest, but I would guess at the ride being so hard as to the main criticism of the type R. I'm in Whalley, near Clitheroe btw.
Magane probably just piped it for chassis and feel. I don't see how it would beat a golf r for real world pace at all.
Nice one I'll need to look out for this. I'm glad the Golf's up there, the wife has one on order to replace her Abarth 500. Sadly as much as I tried I couldn't tempt her into a 275 Trophy, she wanted 5 doors and an auto.
I've seen this floating around Facebook (well I've been tagged a few times) so knew the trophy came out on top. It's just one of those cars that's still at the top of its game considering the car is a 5 (ish) year old model now. It won't be for much longer but that's why the mk4 is scheduled to release soon. Now that may go the way of the Clio but I certainly hope it won't.
I honestly don't know, I've always been into hot hatches and I just think the Honda looks miles better than any new megane
The Honda just looks as bad as this to me: Though I'm not a fan of the front on the newer Megane either tbh
Hold out for the mk4 IMO. I highly doubt anything new will ever match your current car for driving thrills.. plus give it 5 years and your R will probably be worth more than the Civic anyway!
New Honda ? Get real it's full of typical Jap crap add-on's of tacky tasteless bits and pieces. No- thank- you , they aint getting my money any time soon.
To those that wondered about the pace of the Megane vs Golf, Evo's tag line is 'the thrill of driving', and I think it's this they judge the tests on more than anything. Re the looks of the Honda - I was a bit disappointed it didn't look like the mocks-up they were promising, but I do like it generally. 4 door only is a killer for me - and the fact that Honda's are the car of choice of old duffers now it seems. They have become the new Rover as far as I'm concerned.
Honda looks superb for me. However would you want to drive that every day?! Would you want it sat on your drive at night for scumbags to come and touch it?! The golf R is the daddy, it does everything the meg does in terms of fun and handling yet does the daily commute far far easier than the Meg!
Yeah the Honda is a good looking car, although Honda shouldn't have teased us with the concept but I can't imagine it being a daily with the harsh ride. It's made that bloke In the auto express vid with the cupra and Meg bounce up and down like he was a hyperactive kid who just had a pint of FF coke and pack of sweets. That was on a track so on normal UK roads ... I don't think so.
Does it? I thought the R does everything, but the fun and handling. Then again that is my interpretation based on road and track tests I've read.
It really does. I've driven my mates for long long periods of time and over the same great B roads I take the megane and I really think if I was driving them both at the same time nothing would separate them. I think it's a very balanced car with very tight / quick turn in!
It would be interesting to see how a Trophy would have faired without Ohlins in that test I would personally be waiting for the Focus RS if I was in the market for a new car
Says it all. 'The megane 275 trophy is just a class act says jethro. It is getting on and in performance terms it's the slowest car here, but in every other way it's timeless.' 'In the end the 275 scores a unanimous victory. It is truly one of the great performance motoring icons, at this price point or any other. It leads the way for the modern hot hatch, which in recent years has become one of the most impressive and beguiling sectors in our little corner of the motoring world. This really is a golden age for the hot hatch.'
The M135i came last! I test drove one a few years ago. Other than the looks, I thought it was very good. I have not noticed this review being discussed extensively elsewhere. Maybe the wrong car won!
Well I am a bit biased now that I own a 265, but i thought the Golf R would have won. I am not saying it should have. I suppose the Honda should have, being the newest model and latest tech. Considering the RS is 'old' it is a testament to its capabilities that it is still up there. I quite like how it is a specialist car, as opposed to a competent all rounder. Pretty much everyone I know has a car, so I do not need to compromise on space. I think 5 doors is the way most hot hatches are heading now, with paddles.
