Now looking on blackcircles and it's saying the car should have 235/40/18 - but looking at the moment and previous owner has fitted 225/40/18. Does this have any impact on the car? I know they squeal like feck but i assume that's because they're budgets. Any information to optimum tyres?
Correct tyre size for R26 alloys is 234 40 18. You can fit 225 40 18 though as my AD08R tyres are that size.
Apart from a bit of stretch, what difference does it have on the handling? any? As i have a spare rainsport 3 in 225/40 and may buy a 2nd for the front for winter use..
I've just gone from 235s to 225's on the advice from others here, best bit is slightly cheaper but also kinda feel a bit more nimble..still getting used to it but so far so good! I went for PSS which also have a fat rim protector. Got them from oponeo
The only difference I noticed was the tyre sidewall is flush to the rim instead of having a slight overhang.
Less flex on the 225 dynamically. Don't forget, the second number (40) is the aspect ratio. So it's the sidewalk height as a percentage of the width. 225/40 =90mm 235/40= 94mm Which is why as tyres get wider the aspect number reduces, so typically a 255 is a 35 tyre, 275 is a 30. It's not a massive difference on this comparison but the 235 should be a little more forgiving in terms of absorbing bump/terrain etc, but not as sharp in terms of turn in and ultimate steering feel. This is all fair enough but different manufacturers have different approaches to sidewalls and some tyres have a stronger construction in this areas than others of the same size. You'll notice the difference if you compared two of the same tyre brand and model but different size.
Oh not again  The wheel you have is suitable for tyres from 215 to 245. These extremes aren't recommended however but either of the middle 2 sizes are fine.
Sorry if it's already been answered; I do always use the search engine to make sure I don't double up! Some great responses so thanks all!
There is a table in one of the owners booklets for my R26 and it shows 3 different spec of tyres that can be put on 18" rims, the 2x different loads ratings at 235x40 and the higher load rating (92) for 225x40-18. Therefore as far as Renault is concerned yes you can fit 225x40-18 92 tyres.
Sweet, thanks! Will be interesting using them on the road and comparing the handling with varied tyre size Many thanks!
Its in the little additional Megane Renaultsport booklet on pages 2 & 3 "Tyre Pressures". Under 2.0 T 16V it shows 225/40 R18 92Y, 235/40 R18 91Y & 235/40 R18 95Y so one can fit any of those and be within spec. Curiously this means the Michelin PSS 225x40-18 is not within spec as I have only seen them available with an 88 load rating, I was also told many years ago by an Avon tyres engineer never to fit tyres with a lower load rating than OEM.
