Choosing the right, worthwhile modifications for my Megane 225...

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Nick172Cuo, Jul 15, 2015.

  1. Evening all, hope you can help.

I've had my 225 roughly 4 months now and I'm looking to start doing some bits to it. I've been trawling eBay/internet etc and primarily just after some feedback on some parts I've been looking into...

Currently the cars been mapped with a Pipercross cone filter by the previous owner (Dan@SJM in Somerset) and was claimed to be 260bhp, apart from that it's completely standard.
When I came to rolling road the car the figures were only 235bhp / 250lb/ft torque, the operator said that it could be the recirc valve that's weak so I changed that yesterday evening and it seems to have slowed the car down? Power/torque doesn't come on as strong as it did before when it was running fine, does it take a while for the spring in the recirc to soften up a bit?

If you guys can give me feedback on whether these parts below are worthwhile it would be much appreciated...

    Forge Alloy Boost Pipe Kit
Forge brake vacuum and pressure sensor clamps (know K-Tec have their own set also)
    Silicon intake hose kit

The game plan is to eventually have 280/280 as that's all I'd really want from the car and to not 'lunch' the engine in process, what else would I need to achieve this? At what point does the standard turbo/exhaust limit the power?

I'm sure like the Clio RS' that there's mods that a worthwhile and some that just aren't for what I'm after, not wasting money is my main aim!

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Cheers
    Nick

  2. Exhaust, air box mod, cooler, forge recirc valve, (what recirc do you have in it is it standard or forge one?) the mods you have listed are nice to have and i have them but their not essential if your just doing mods where you will gain power for the money etc

have a look at my project thread ive got similar spec to what your after.

  3. Ideally I'd like to keep the standard exhaust as I don't want a noisy car/don't like the noise the Meggy's make, been offered a 2.75 decat which I'm told makes a difference but will it mate up to the standard cat-back and will it need re-calibrating again?
Just fitted a forge recirc with a green spring.
Pipercross Cone filter came with it.

Ultimately, if its going to cost a £1000 to make the extra 20bhp then I wont bother, but if a decat and intercooler actually help to make more power with the current map it has and also hold power for longer than i'll spend the money to get them fitted.

With the intercooler also, how are people getting on with the ebay ones over the airtec/forge part?

  4. Dont need any of those.

Intercooler ( chinese is fine )
Injectors - 630 deka siemens shorts
    Decat
    Large air filter

that should yield 280ish bhp and 300ibft

You dont need a recirc valve or any fancy actuator.

That lot will need a remap as well. RSTuning get great results.

  5. Cheers for the input, definitely put the cat amoungst the pigeons with what you've said to use to get the above power/torque.

So in reality, Ill need a decat/injectors/intercooler and get the car remapped again and that's going to be around £1000. So not really worth doing. lol

  6. He might if his standard one is weak.

  7. I also wouldn't bother with a Chinese intercooler.
There is a bloke selling Forge (without the badge) intercooler so you know what your getting unlike the Chinese lottery ones.

  8. What valve did you fit? Recirc or vta?

    Who's selling the forge's?

  10. It's defiantly worth doing id say big difference in power imo

    I'm running 277

    Chinese intercooler
    RS tuning map
    RS tuning decat
Including fitting the fitting it was £915

  11. Here you go.

  12. Decent tyres and save the rest for repairs!

  13. This!

  14. Good tyres
    good brakes
    stage 1
    job done and enjoy

  15. Recirc James.

  16. The cars in good fettle chaps, cambelt/aux etc good until 2017, Michelin PS3's all round, hub bearings I've got spare for when they tire, already got savings for clutch/DMF, hence really looking at my options for what I can do improve the car powerwise.

As said in reality though, now its as its 260bhp with similar torque its not worth spending the extra grand for another 20bhp and torque. If it was standard i'd be sure to do everything to push it to 280+.

    Cheers

  17. Id assume that at times it would offer full boost pressure and other times not if it was weak? When squeezing it, it was very soft!

  18. PS3 are not a great tyre buddy. I would look at changing those.

  19. Curious, what's wrong withe standard interwarmers??

  20. They are so inefficient its unreal.

  21. Good tyres

    Ferodo ds1.11 and decent discs

And a map, which you already have. Anything after that is bonus.

Mines been one of the best cars I've ever owned it's great on track and can munch the miles if needed.

I've spent a small fortune but most of its been modifications and and odd wear and tear items and I am rather particular with my car but they really aren't as bad to run as some try and make out in my opinion

  22. Corge / airtech is 90mm not 60 as mentioned in that tread.
IMO airtec is best quality unit

  23. Are you sure? Michelins most premium tyre bar the pilot sport cups, run them on all my cars.

Be intrigued to see shat you class as a good sporty road tyre...

  24. Ill 100% sure

    Ps2 are better , PSS , PSCup , some wouldnt onside them as a road tyre but I use them - RSR595 , R888

I have tried loads , and loads of tyres on my meg. I didnt rate the PS3 at all. Not a patch on the ps2.

I wasn't overly impressed with the PS3 on my Megane... I found the PS2 a better tyre.

I'll have a set of PSS on this weekend

  26. I tried to get an independent intercooler test but no one was interested.

Personally I wouldn't want a 90mm core, there is no need to be that big on my power.

  28. Emptied mate.

  29. Mine has decat, RS Tuning map, forge recirc and makes 272/285. I do have an induction kit but they don't add any power, it was already on the car when I bought it otherwise I'd have just had an air box mod with panel filter.

Anything above 275/280 and you start throwing a lot of money for very minor gains.

  30. They do ...

  31. On a standard turbo, injectors etc? News to me tbh, everything I've read on the forums with RR tests says they make no difference apart from maybe on bigger power cars. I'm happy to be wrong though...

The ITG kit has proven gains from standard to modified.

  33. Any members cars with examples? Not doubting, but I literally haven't seen a single person on here say they've had any gains from an induction kit.

It was discussed on the 'other' forum when the kit was first released.

  35. The aluminum pipes are god for cunducting heat away from the intake air to the ambien ie acting as a IC. Those gains cant be measured on the dyno puls...

  36. Mine

Added around 8bhp with other mods at the time.

The 250 doesnt appear to gain with a induction kit

ill find the old rolling road results now - before and after the ITG kit fitted, definate gains though, car felt much more eager to accelerate too, i shall be getting one for my current R26 within the next few weeks

The plan was to try the car on the rolling road to see if the filter made a difference both on the standard map and then with a stage 1 map and what gains over the standard air box could be achieved

We arrived at Tour De Force, had a quick look round and then got on with it - Matt put the car on to the rollers and carried out the first 3 runs, all of which were with the ITG induction kit fitted, unfortunately this is where the day went a little bit difficult - my car made 252bhp at peak power so Matt's opinion was that it must have already been mapped at some stage in the car's life. I explained that I had never had it mapped and I was 99% sure the lad I bought it off (big spence off the forum) didnt have it mapped either but left it at that and moved on
So the ITG kit was removed and the standard air box put back on - only took about 20 mins and was simple enough but meant disconnecting the battery etc to get the box back in. Ran it on the rollers again - another 3 runs and best result was 245bhp so an obvious gain - not as much as ITG were hoping for but said to be fair they were expecting more of a gain once the stage 1 map had been added.
Now because Matt couldn't confirm it the car was mapped or not he didn't want to put a stage 1 map on so I was a little disappointed - this meant that ITG didn't know whether this was the gain that could be achieved with a stage 1 map or without plus my car either has a lot of power for a pretty much standard car or pretty low power for a stage 1 car which didn't really help ITG very much. There was talk of different companies remap's etc and not all achieve the same gains but I was adamant that the car had not been mapped so was a bit annoyed not to have found out what it could possibly have achieved. ITG agreed that it is obviously worthwhile though so are definitely going to put it into production now but really need to do the testing all over again to get some decent idea of potential gains.
I have since spoken to the previous owner again and am 110% sure it has never been mapped so I will be going to RS Tuning next time for a proper stage 1 custom map at some point but thats an 700 mile round trip Im really not looking forward to! I have spoken to Paul and Matt at TDF was going to be sending him the file to look over and he said he will also be able to check if it has ever been mapped before or not

So the graphs as you will see show it is a worthwhile mod - unfortunately doesn't show quite as much as we were hoping to have shown but i'm sure it will help a more modified engine significantly better - all I know is I have now come home with the standard air box back on as they needed to keep the prototype for testing etc and the car feels crap without it - sluggish and a bit dull, the exhaust note sounds strained - really cant wait to get it back!

  39. So to add to this thread on my R26, what about the RS250 turbocharger unit as an upgrade... is it worth it if I can find a second hand one for reasonable money?

Interesting graph on the itg filter to standard comparison, but how would a replacement panel filter (green / K&N) with airbox mod compare? I currently have a small (ish) KTec induction filter but am debating whether to fit a modded airbox / K&N instead.

Other mods I have / am planning are
    forge recirc valve standard spring
ktec turbo back 3" exhaust with decat
    chinese fmic
    siemens 630cc injectors
    rs tuning stage 2 map
    larger forge pipework

Just to clarify I have done the tyres & brakes already (AD08R, ferodo DS1.11 brembo hc)

    I'm aiming for a good 285bhp/295lbft
